I. BUILDING MAINTENANCE
A. Public Works hung the 75th Anniversary banner across the North entrance fascia 12/2.
B. Becky and Public Works Director Kevin Hansen met with Pete DiCarlo of Advanced Energy
Management 12/2. Pete prepared a proposed work plan to replace the Adult Reading Room
light fixtures under an Excel Energy program.
II. COLLECTION
A. Several year-end items with requests were received, but no major orders were placed.
B. The adult paperbacks are being weeded.
III. EQUIPMENT
A. Both VCR's used in the Children's Department are broken. Jean Kuehn installed a
replacement for one and is looking for another replacement.
B. The radio that provides music on the Library's cable channel has been "drifting" off the
signal over the past month. The Cable Company investigated the situation 12/19 and will be
replacing a modulator in the communications basket.
C. Eight new chairs for the Library Boardroom arrived 12/12. The seven old chairs were
transferred to the lunchroom at Public Works.
D. The fan on a hub used by the Automated Circulation System malfunctioned 12/13 and had to
be replaced.
E. The battery of the UPS also had to be replaced because it could no longer hold a charge.
F. The elevator malfunctioned 12/17 and briefly trapped a patron between floors. The Fire
Department discovered that the emergency key box was empty when they arrived. Schindler
placed a replacement key in the box 12/19.
IV. PROGRAMS
A. Information on the Library was updated in the new resident packets given out by the City.
B. The Community Reception for the kick off of the Columbia Heights Public Library's 75th
Anniversary Year was held 12/3. About 70 people enjoyed harp music, tours of the
building, an historical slide show, and remarks by Board President Barb Miller and Mayor
Gary Peterson.
C. The Foundation held a fundraiser 12/15 at the Heights Theatre with two screenings of
"Holiday Inn", live entertainment, and refreshments.
D. The CHASE programs for 2002 are all completed.
E. 107 books were collected for Project Bookshelf.
F. Integrated Waste Management put up a display of environment-friendly gift-wrap 12/2.
G. The Board met 12/3 with four members present.
H. The Friends met 12/2 with eight members present.
I. Bulk loans were delivered to the high rises and the schools.
1. Two sessions of holiday storytime were held 12/10 and 12/17.
K. Marsha made a presentation 12/12 to the Independent School District 13 Principals about
potential cooperative programs.
L. Becky conducted a workshop for the part-time Library Supervisors 12/14.
M. The classes from Immaculate Conception School visited the Library during their regularly-
scheduled times the week of 12/16-12/20.
V. AUTOMATED CIRCULATION SYSTEM
A. Becky met with Bev Flaherty, Mary Caven, and Judy Soule from Anoka County Library
(ACL) to discuss access to the ACL intranet. The major factor involves use of electronic
databases paid for directly by ACL. Information on costs will be obtained. Columbia
Heights Public Library will also be able to place information on programs, services, and
schedules on the Intranet.
VI. STAFF
A. Becky revised the page schedule to accommodate changes in the college students' class
schedules.
B. The 2003 raises for part-time Library employees passed at the City Council meeting of
12/16/02.
C. Marsha attended "Wise Up At Your Library" meetings 12/4 and 12/16.
D. Becky attended the Library Operations Council Meeting 12/5 at LSS.
E. Mary conducted a walk through with Fidelity cleaners 12/12.
F. Marsha attended a storytellers meeting at N orthtown 12/17.
G. Jeanine participated in a cable shoot 12/30.
VII. MISC
A. A MELSA survey was conducted 12/5.
B. The staff attended the City holiday luncheon at Murzyn Hall 12/10.
C. Mayor Gary Peterson provided pizzas for lunch on 12/20. The Staff appreciated his
recognition of their work.
D. The Library was closed 12/24 and 12/25. The Library closed at 5: 00 p.m. 12/31.
