Rebecca Loader, Library Director SUBJECT: November operational report DATE: November 29,2002 I. BUILDING MAINTENANCE A. Honeywell performed routine maintenance on the building HV AC 11/1. B. The duct work was cleaned 11/4-11/6 after the building was closed to the public. C. Mary conducted a walk-through inspection with Fidelity Cleaners 11/14. II. COLLECTION A. The last video order (all replacements) for 2002 was placed. B. Becky met with Joe Schmitz, book company representative, 11/6 to review small press titles. C. Paperback orders and non-requested titles were held for ordering later in the year. D. The pages are working on the magazines mending project. III. EQUIPMENT A. Eight new chairs have been ordered to replace the broken and worn-out chairs in the Library Boardroom. Money not expended in the automation project has been re-allocated for this purchase. B. The public use copier was serviced twice during the month. This copier (Toshiba) was purchased in 1991. C. Becky and Kevin Hansen, Columbia Heights Public Works Director, met with Peter DiCarlo, Advanced Energy Management, on 11/19 to discuss alternatives for the lighting fixtures in the Adult Reading Room. Mr. DiCarlo will get back to staff with a report and recommendation in about a week. IV. PROGRAMS A. The Springbrook Nature Center presented a demonstration on various animals as part of the Twin Cities One Book Program on 11/2. B. 80 3rd graders from Valley View Elementary toured the Library 11/4. C. The Friends met 11/4 with nine members present. D. Project Bookshelf started 11/4. E. The Board met 11/4 with four members present. F. Six sessions of pre-school storytime were held during the month. G. Bulk loans were delivered to the schools on 11/7 and senior citizen high rises 11/6. H. On 11/7 members of the Friends addressed and stamped the invitations to the 75th Anniversary open house. I. Special tours were held 11/13 for two Headstart groups. 1. The Immaculate Conception School classes came to the Library during their regularly scheduled times the week of 11/18. K. Two English as a Second Language classes visited the Library on 11/20 and 11/21. L. The Barnes & Noble Bookfair was held 11/23 at the HarMar location from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. M. Becky and the Library Board of Trustees presented a public invitation to the 75th Anniversary Community Reception at the 11/25 City Council meeting. N. The Columbia Heights Public Library Foundation Board met 11/26. O. Preparations for celebrating the Library's 75th anniversary continue. The community reception held on 12/3 from 7:00-8:30 will be the inaugural event. V. AUTOMATED CIRCULATION SYSTEM A. Al Rautio, Anoka County Library network specialist, installed one additional parallel scanner on a pc workstation 11/5. B. The new pc's used for circulation have made it through the first month with only minor glitches. Staff is learning new techniques of use for the first time since 1987. VI. STAFF A. The Library Supervisor schedule for January-May, 2003, was compiled and distributed. The page schedule for the same time period has not been formalized, as two of the college students have not received their new schedules for next semester yet. B. Marsha met with Kathy Kelly, Assistant Superintendent for ISD # 13, on 11/8 to discuss potential cooperative ventures. C. Three pages had performance reviews during the month. D. Jeanine participated in a cable shoot 11/20. VII. MISC A. A MELSA crossover use survey was conducted 11/12.
