Friends: The Friends of the Library met for an evening dinner meeting on Monday, October 7, 2002, at 5:30 p.m. at the Keys Restaurant in Spring Lake Park. They reviewed the by-law changes that will be voted on at the November meeting. I discussed with them the need for volunteers at the Barnes & Noble fundraiser, kick-off open house, and fundraiser at Heights Theater. Project Bookshelf begins, November 1, and the Friends will decorate a collection box at next month's meeting. Gloria Tarmann and Nancy Rathbun volunteered to put address labels on the open house invitations. B. At home service: I selected library materials and arranged delivery for two "at home" patrons this month. While Sandi Engquist recuperated from her surgery, Connie Carlson delivered items. C. Bulk Loans: I selected, processed, and delivered bulk loans to Heights Manor and Parkview Villa on Wednesday, October 2. II. Collection develovment: A. Audio/cd books: I completed orders for books on CD and books-on-tape and prepared purchase order requisitions. Orders were sent to Baker & Taylor and Books on Tape, Inc. ACL uses Books on Tape for audio books. Some audiobooks can only be purchased from this company because they own exclusive rights. III. Proiects and floals: A. Book display: This month's display in the lobby featured new titles recently added to the library's collection. November's display will feature new cookbooks in time for holiday entertaining. B. Adopt-A-Shelf: Five patrons have volunteered for the Adopt-A-Shelfprogram: Shari Briley, Connie Carlson, Barb Miller, Sharon Nelson, and Rita Norberg. C. Bulletin board: This month's bulletin board featured a Halloween theme. D. School visits: This month I made presentations to three classes: ESL Level 4, from NEI; and the Transitions and Life Skills classes from Columbia Heights High School. The Life Skills class instructor requested I read a story to his class. I chose a Halloween story, John Pig's Halloween. E. Booklists: I completed the booklist, "100 Great Works of Fiction by Women". It was duplicated and placed in the brochure rack. F. Polish/American Heritage Month: By request from the Sister City Committee, I displayed books on Poland. I also updated the accompanying booklist. G. 75th Anniversary: I designed an invitation for the December kick-off open house and a sign. H. Budget Report: I updated and itemized the budget report for library supplies. IV. Miscellaneous: . Ordered office and library supplies. . Posted the New York Times Best Seller List. . Processed delivery from AC1. . Conducted a walk through with Fidelity. . Prepared copy for the November library Newsletter. . Added books to the COH-NEW displays. . Addressed library newsletters to City and Anoka County staff. . Prepared copy for Heights Happenings.
