The Barnes and Noble Fundraiser is progressing nicely. Flyers have been designed and are being distributed throughout the community. I have also developed a contact listing for PT A's and Church newsletters and will be sending articles to these contacts the first part of November. Columbia Heights Royalty has volunteered to help hand out vouchers on the day of the event. I will be contacting City Council members and Library Board Members the first of November requesting participation from them as greeters. b. Plans for the Holiday Spectacular at Heights Theater are also progressing nicely. The even is scheduled for Dec 15 with shows at 2 and 6 pm. Rainbow foods will be donating 38 gallons of cider for the event, Rapid Printing has agreed to print the programs, board member, Dave Holmgren, is designing flyers and posters, and arrangements are being made for live entertainment. Library Board members, Barb Miller, Catherine Vesley, and Pat Sowada will be visiting local businesses soliciting funds to help pay for the event. c. Plans for National Children's Book Week, November 18-24are also underway. The children's department will be providing a variety of activities including crossword puzzles, guessing games, coloring sheets and possibly a take home craft activity. d. Staff is working on the program design for the Library's Community Reception scheduled for December 3, 7-8:30pm. A possible layout has been submitted to the director. Final copy will be ready by November 15. e. Teen Read celebration 2003 consisted of a poster contest conducted by the library. We received 3 final applicants. Their work is on display on the lower level and the public is being asked to vote on a winner. The winner will be announced sometime in November. f. The Twin Cities One Book program began Late September and continues through November. We have been handing out orienteering entry forms, bookmarks, tattoos and activity sheets. The children's department has seen little excitement over this program but materials seem to be moving on the main floor. Perhaps this is a sign that young adults really do avoid visiting the children's department, if so we might want to consider basing most of our Young Adult programming from the main level. IV. COLLECTION DEVELOPMENT a. Staff completed the inventory of the all Juvenile non-fiction, Quarto Juvenile non-fiction, Easy picture books and audiocassettes. Plans are underway to do an inventory of the readers, and EJ fiction sections to be competed by the end of January 2003. b. I am preparing an update to our BWI (Book Wholesaler Inc) standing order. BWI provides the library with a majority of juvenile paperbacks. We have increased the size of this collection over the last 2 years. I will be evaluating the collection based on circulation and condition: weeding some materials and adding some titles. V. STAFF a. Children's Department Clerk, Kelly Olson has had a busy month. Kelly organized and provided two story times during Halloween week because I was ill. She did an outstanding job. Thanks for all her efforts. Kelly also completed the design and layout of the Community Reception invitation and program, designed flyers for the upcoming Holiday Inn fundraiser, aided in the development of the flyers and stands for the Barnes and Noble fundraiser, and produced the final copy of the Sampler. In addition to these tasks Kelly received a number of book orders, updated the magazine holdings listing as requested by Anoka County, and began work on the year-end billing figures. b. Department Aid, Cristy Tombarge has been busy printing all the flyers mentioned above. Cristy also aided in establishing several displays: Halloween, Thanksgiving, Holiday and our Twin Cities One Book display. Cristy and Mindy Hicks completed typing the backlog of shelf list cards. Cristy has also been developing mailing lists for use during the 75th armiversary celebrations. c. Pages aided in the completion of the inventory, processed books, folded, stapled and stuffed boxes of flyers for distribution throughout the community. Pages also aided in developing bulletin boards for Teen Read. d. I participated with the director in a Performance evaluation of Cristy Tombarge on November 9th.
