HomeMy WebLinkAboutOperational Report from Marsha To: From: Subject: Date: I. II. III. M. Rebecca Loader, Library Director Marsha Tubbs, Children's Librarian September 2002 Operational Report September 27,2002 PROGRAMS A. The Children's Department participated in two of District 13 open houses this month. These programs are considered outreach as they are designed to draw people into the library. At each program we took registrations for library cards, handed out bookmarks and candy, and held drawing for book related items. COLLECTION A. The inventory we began this summer is complete except for a very few items that are currently in circulation. The Children's Department completed inventory in the J non- fiction, E non-fiction, QJ non-fiction, and the easy picture book collections. The collection is in good shape and I was pleasantly surprised that the easy collection had very few losses. We do need to consider collection development in the easy section however, as a number of the age old favorites have worn out and need replacing. B. I placed an order for a number of Graphic Novels to be added to the collection. These titles will create another section within the young adult paperback area with the call number "Graphic Novel". Thanks to the new shelving we will have a space for them. The few that we have added to date are creating something of a minor stir within the young adult users. There seems to be a sense of disbelief that the library is carrying these, but the kids are pleased and check them out immediately. The collection is being added in preparation for the ALA Teen Read Program in October titled "Get Graphic @ the Library". C. A number of smaller orders were also placed this month: 1) books related to 9-11 and its anniversary, 2) Halloween titles, and 3) Maud Hart Lovelace nominee titles that we were missing. I expect that I will have an order of holiday titles to send out sometime next month. PROJECTS A . Twin Cities One Book, a program sponsored by Metronet and currently being offered at nine metro libraries, began on September 15. The book selected as "one book" is Hatchet by Gary Paulsen, a native of Minnesota. The program will continue through November 15 and includes: online chats with the author, appearances by Gary Paulsen, Orienteering @ Your Library and prize giveaways. The Columbia Heights Public Library will be hosting a Springbrook Nature Center program on November 2 as a part of Twin Cities One Book. B. Get Graphic @ the Library is the 2002 theme for Teen Read Week. As a part of this national promotion campaign, the library is sponsoring a graphic poster contest. The contest is open to teens ages 13 to 18. Participants are asked to produce an original work in Anime, Manga, or cartoon design featuring a hero or heroine promoting books or reading. C. When Knights Were Bold is a program sponsored jointly through the Columbia Heights Public Library and Anoka County Library. The program is scheduled for October 12 at 10:30 am in Huset Park (east end). Knights and ladies will be on hand to demonstrate combat, Rapier fencing, and the finer arts of the Middle Ages. The Society for Creative Anachronism will be providing the program. D. Plans are underway for the Barnes and Noble fundraiser on November 23 from 1 :00 - 4:00 p.m. We will be looking for volunteers to function as greeters, storytellers, and people to promote books for purchase. The staff will be compiling lists of recommendations for gift giving and the Library Channel 19 will have a listing of gift suggestions changing week to week. E. Dave Holmgren from Heights Theater and I met to discuss the advertising, promotion and planning required for the Holiday Inn fundraiser. Plans are underway to provide an evening of entertainment, film, and refreshments. The program is scheduled for December 15 with showings at 2:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. IV. STAFF A. Children's Clerk, Kelly Olson attended an open house at Valley View School on September 19, she sent and received several book orders, completed the updates to the Children's Department Clerk's manual, began work on three booklists, and completed the layout and design for the Sampler. B. Aide Cristy Tombarge has been working on typing the backlog of shelf list cards, completing the second set of slides for the 75th anniversary PowerPoint presentation, and printing flyers and handouts produced in-house. C. Pages spent the month of September getting caught up on projects left incomplete at the end of the summer i.e., new shelf1abels, shifting of some shelves, bulletin board preparations, checking selection tools for possible orders, and setting up book displays. Alicia Cermak developed the design for the 75th Anniversary emblem to appear on library stationery throughout the year and Nick, Ben, and Ramon have been working on the "Get Graphic" bulletin boards.
