PROGRAMS
A. Summer programming came to a close this month. All programs were well received. American
Girl was expanded to two sessions and a total of 65 girls attended. We did have to turn down
approximately six late registrations for this program. Next year, if funds are available, we will
increase registrations to 40 per session as we had approximately six registrants that did not show.

VOLUNTEERS
A. Thirty-five volunteers and family members gathered on August 22 for the 6th Annual Volunteer
Recognition luncheon. Library board members, Catherine Vesley and Dave Holmgren presented
gifts to the 18 volunteers present. Volunteers and family members enjoyed a lunch of Cousin's
subs, chips, brownies, and ice cream bars. Cousin's donated a 4-foot party sub and the Dairy
Queen donated ice cream bars. Thanks to everyone for making it a successful and enjoyable
event.
COLLECTION
A. Inventory of the easy collection and the J nonfiction continues. This is a slow and time
consuming process but I am finding it very valuable. Our easy collection has a large number of
items with charged assumed lost status. The inventory is locating those titles and will enable me
to clean up the records and replace high demand items providing funding is available.
B. Along with the inventory I have been doing collection development in some areas of the
nonfiction. I have completed the 900's, which is the last section to require collection
development since I began 8 years ago. I plan on checking the high circulation areas (500's,
600's, and portions of the 700's) again this year just to make sure that our holdings continue to
remain up to date. The 300's will need collection development sometime in the next 3 years. I
also need to take a close look at the newly developed E Non-Fiction but may not get to that
before January.
C. I am working on a book order for a new paperback collection. I would like to include graphic
novels in our Y A paperback and possibly J paperback areas. October is Teen Read Month and
this year's theme is Get Graphic at the Library. Word from Anoka County is that the county
system will not be adding graphic novels at this time due to a shortage of funds. If I can add
titles in the paperback areas, the cost to us is nominal and will add considerably to the promotion
campaign in October. Wouldn't it be great to have a Superhero visit the Library in October? I
am told that we have a Library patron that performs as Superman - this bears further
investigation.
IV. PROJECTS
A. Huset Park will become the site of medieval combat on October 12 at 10:30 am. The young
adult program committee consisting of staff from both Columbia Heights and Anoka County has
arranged for a demonstration of armored combat, Rapier fencing, and life in the Middle Ages.
The demonstration will be provided by the Society for Creative Anachronism and will be free to
the public.
B. We continue to plan programs for Teen Read Week and for National Library Card Sign-Up
Month, Fall Storytime, National Children's Book Week, and Holiday Storytime.
C. Work continues on the re-Iabeling of shelves. J non-fiction is complete, most of the E non-
fiction is complete and all J and Y A fiction. We have the easy section, audiocassettes, QJ, and
Reference areas to finish.
D. I met with the Immaculate Conception teaching staff on August 27 to establish the 2002-2003
schedule for class visits and bulk loan delivery. We will be seeing all grades this year (K-8)
once a month beginning September 16 thru the 20. Ten classrooms signed up for the bulk loan
service, which will begin September 12. I have made arrangements with the Police Department
to utilize the DARE van and provide the services of a CSO for these book deliveries.
V. STAFF
A. I joined the director in performance evaluations this month.
B. Cristy Tombarge, Library Aide, began working on the shelf1ist card project and has completed
approximately 250 cards to date. She also aided in the shelf-labeling project, completed the final
touches on the Library Directors Power Point program and printed numerous forms including
this month's newsletter.
C. Kelly Olson, Children's Department Clerk, placed and received two large book orders,
completed the second quarter statistics analysis, provided layout expertise for the newsletter,
began work on two new booklists and aided in the planning and preparation of the Volunteer
Reception. Kelly also produced flyers to accompany the Power Point presentation given to
Anoka County Library staff.
D. Pages within the department have been busy preparing new shelf labels, aiding in preparations
for book orders, preparing bulletin boards, and aiding in the some of the preparations for the
. 75th .
upcomIng anmversary.
