Rebecca Loader, Library Director SUBJECT: August operational report DATE: August 30, 2002 I. BUILDING MAINTENANCE A. Mary conducted a walk-through with Fidelity Cleaners 8/1. B. Honeywell changed the filters in the roof top HV AC units 8/2. C. Public Works' summer work crews hand-weeded the Library's back yard 8/8. D. Orkin was at the Library for routine maintenance 8/15. II. COLLECTION A. With the closing of The Bookrnen, the Library has been looking for a new paperback supplier. An account with Ingram, an established dealer, has been set up, but they are not sending a good fill on orders. Staff is currently looking at alternative sources. B. The paperback romances and westerns were weeded by Barb and John. C. Barb compiled a large print order. D. The "enroute-for-more-than-60-days" list was checked for on the shelves. E. A compact disc replacement order was placed. F. A video replacement order was placed. G. Inventory continues in both departments. While this project has been very time-consuming, many problems have been solved and missing items and light subject areas have been identified. III. EQUIPMENT A. A lightning strike near the Credit Union took out the Library's power 8/20. After one hour without power, the building closed at 7:30 p.m. B. Several pieces of broken equipment were picked up 8/21 for disposal at the City's auction in September. IV. PROGRAMS A. Kelly and Marsha met with Frannie Jensen of the Sister City Organization 8/1 and helped her make posters for their Chopin concert in October. B. The last Super Tuesday was held 8/6 ("Half-Pint & Oscar"). C. The Board met 8/6 with five members in attendance. D. Becky met with Bev Flaherty and Mary Caven of the Anoka County Library 8/8 to discuss the users' brochure and how it is distributed, what is listed in it, and who pays for what. E. The Anoka County health surveys collected in the building were turned in to the County 8/12. F. The American Girl program "Molly's Pajama Party," was held 8/14 and 8/15 for a record number of participants. This program was funded through CHASE. G. The Volunteer Recognition program was held 8/21. H. The City picnic was held 8/21. I. Becky joined other connnunity service representatives 8/22 in a program at the Heights Theatre to welcome 30 new teachers to Independent School District # 13. 1. Becky gave a presentation entitled, "From Red Wagons to PC's: 75 Years of Library Service," as part of the Anoka County Library Staff Day 8/23 at Bunker Hills Activity Center. The staff had a drive for the local food shelf and collected 147 jars of peanut butter and 1 jar of strawberry preserves. Columbia Heights staff donated 13 jars to the total. K. Marsha addressed the Innnaculate Conception School teachers at their in-service meeting 8/26 about bulk loans, corporate cards, and class schedules. L. Reading clubs ended 8/30 with the following totals: Libra 188 Summer Reading Club 558 ("Your Library: A hoppin' place.") Both 11 7 V. AUTOMATED CIRCULATION SYSTEM A. On 8/6 Becky attended a demo by SIRSI, an automation vendor, at the Scott County Library in Savage. DRA, the Library's current vendor, has been absorbed by SIRSI. Librarians from three area systems were in attendance. Becky will be a member of the connnittee that writes the RFP for the new integrated library system (ILS). B. The pc's which are used as public access catalogs had to be re-configured 8/8 to run the new electronic databases available through MELSA. VI. STAFF A. Mindy Hicks celebrated her six-months anniversary as Library Clerk. B. Five pages had performance reviews during the month. C. Jeanine participated in a cable shoot 8/29. D. Marsha met with a representative of U.S. Bourne Book Company 8/30. E. The fall Supervisor and Page schedules have been set up and distributed. VII. MISC A. A MELSA survey was conducted 8/13.
