HomeMy WebLinkAboutOperational Report from Marsha To: M. Rebecca Loader, Library Director From: Marsha Tubbs, Children’s Librarian Subject: June 2002 Operational Report Date: June 28, 2002 I. PROGRAMS A. The 2002 Super Tuesday programs got off to a grand start on June 11 with the Teddy Bea r Band. We had 192 children, adults, and teddy bears enjoyed a terrific show. B. Our summer Reading programs are off to a great start. The Discover a Hoppin’ Place @ the Library program has total registrations of 418 at this time. Last year’s registrati on total for the season was 748 in both programs. We are ahead of schedule at this time with nearly 2/3 of last year’s total participation levels registered within the first three weeks of 2002. C. The LIBRA program is doing exceptionally well this year. We have registered 153 in this program, which is double the registration from last year in just the first three weeks. Much of this success belongs to the efforts of the Central Middle School Media Specialist Valija Rassmusson who spoke to each CMS classroo m and promoted the program before school let out. D. Funtime registration totaled 50 children for this session. Average attendance is about 26 children plus 8 adults. II. COLLECTION A. We have begun taking inven tory of the J900’s. Thus far we are finding a number of items housed in the easy non - fiction section but with shelf list cards in the J Non Fiction area. We have located very few items without shelf list cards, with the exception of the 2001& 2002 purcha ses that are yet to be filed. B. I have placed several large book orders over the last 6 weeks and am currently caught up to April 2002 in the selection tools. I am reserving the Non - fiction titles for possible purchase in early fall. I anticipate that we m ay need much more in the non - fiction areas due to changes in the CMS and CHHS Media Center’s hours and staffing. Recent editions of School Library Journ al made note of the increase in the cost of children’s books over the last three years. Average price for hardcover in 2000 was $17.57, 2001 was $18.58, 2002 is $18.78 with non - fiction averaging $21.46 per hardcover and picture books are at $16.83. IV. PROJECTS A. Fall program planning and scheduling has begun. At this time I am looking at offering an art con test in October to coincide with the Teen Read Week theme of Get Graphic @ the Library. Plans are underway for special Storytime sessions during National Children’s Book Week. B. Pages and volunteers are working together to prepare bulletin boards and flann el boards for use over the upcoming months. Ramon Gomez, Nick Olberding, and Ben Pressler all have considerable talent in the graphic art areas. Each has been given a bulletin board to design and will be working closely with the volunteers on completing the task. C. Cristy Tombarge, Library Aide, has been working on a project for the Library Director. She is aiding in the development of a power point presentation on the history of Columbia Heights th Public Library to be used next year during the 75 Anniver sary. The presentation is extensive and very well put together. Cristy is a pro in this area and her talents are proving to be invaluable. IV. STAFF A. Kelly Olson, Children’s Clerk, has been extremely busy this month. Aside from sending and receiving several large book orders, she has been instrumental in the success of the reading clubs (making sure that no child leaves the department without being registered). It has been taking both of our efforts to keep the volunteers working effectively. Kelly also completed the magazine shift, produced posters for the Super Tuesday programs, produced flyers and posters for the BMX Bike Demo, and updated a Harry Potter booklist. B. Ali Kondrick, our seasonal Program Aid has been busy with the registration of 153 teens in the LIBRA program and planning the American Girl program for August. Ali will also be aiding me in the planning and preparations of Teen programs for this coming Fall. C. Pages are aiding in the inventory of the J900’s, registering children for the reading clubs, re - labeling the shelving for the building, preparing bulletin boards for upcoming months and processing the new books.
