The Friends of the Library met twice during the month of May on the 6 to finalize the th book sale plans and again on the day of book sorting, May 15. Betty Robbins and Rita Norberg reported on the organizational meeting they attended at ACL for starting a Friends of the Library group. Staffing for the book sale and the Friends new purchasing policy were reviewed. The book sale was held on Thursday, May 16, from 9:00 a.m.–8:00 p.m. A pre-sale was held on Wednesday, May 15, from 6:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m. Tickets for the presale were sold at the door and each person was given a number when they bought a ticket. This allowed the patrons to browse around the library before the sale and as numbers were called they were allowed in to shop. Forty people attended the presale hours. Many books were sold at the presale and shoppers from as far away as Grand Rapids, MN. drove down for the sale. The sale was very successful with the Friends making $1,400.00, their highest amount ever. The Human Service Commission chose Rita Norberg as 2002 Humanitarian of the Year. The Friends worked very hard at the book sorting day, presale and day of the sale. They hired two high school age boys to bring the books out of storage and one of the pages to help on clean up day. Each helper was paid $20.00. I did some additional publicity for the sale which included posting a book sale sign at McDonald’s, and advertising on the Internet through “booksalefinder.com”. The Friends initiated their new purchasing policy, which now allows them to buy books only during the presale along with the public who purchase $5.00 tickets. The Friends are allowed to shop at the presale free of charge. Open House: B. I prepared signs and display items for the City-wide open house. The public enjoyed the “fishbowl questions”, and they liked the small prizes. Annual Report Flyer: C. I prepared a 2002 annual report flyer using the theme: Bloom and Grow @ Columbia Heights Public Library. Library statistics were integrated into the theme using garden and landscaping terminology.
