th
A. The Summer Reading Program for 2002 will begin June 7. The theme for this year is
Discover a Hoppin’ Place @ your library. This year’s theme represents the first official statewide library
program. Children’s Clerk, Kelly Olson and I visited all elementary classes in District 13. We distributed
summer brochures to all students. I read the Baby Bee Bee Bird to all classes. Actual numbers of students
seen are reflected in the Outreach table below.
th
B. The LIBRA reading program also begins on June 7. This program is only available within
th
Anoka County and is limited to students entering 5 grade in the fall. CMS Media Specialist Valija
thth,th
Rassmusson and North Park Media Specialist Shelly Edwardson along with myself canvassed the 4, 5 6,
thth
7, and 8 grade classes encouraging students to participate this summer.
C. The Super Tuesday Performers schedule is finally complete. The schedule is as follows:
June 11 The Teddy Bear Band
June 18 Kenwood puppets
June 25 Bruce the Magic 1
July 2 No program
July 9 Dazzling Dave and his Yo-Yo’s Extraordinaire
July 26 Kit and Kaboodle

D. Volunteers have been recruited for the summer. We have 18 young people volunteering this

busy.

II. COLLECTION
A. We spent a good portion of the month checking computer lists supplied by ACL. The lists
contained titles with high circ figures that should be considered for discard. At one time in the past we were
adding the circulation totals to replacement books. These items continue to show up on the high circ lists. If
there were a way to mark these records it would save time in the near future. Until then, we will continue to
pull the books and do a visual check of their condition.
B. The new YA paperback shelving has been labeled and the EJ paperback shelving relabeled
with the help of the new aide Cristy Tombarge.
C. I placed a couple of large orders for YA paperbacks, audio cassettes, and J and YA hardcover
fiction this month. I think we are in good shape for the summer season.
III. PROJECTS
A. The inventory and reorganization of storytime materials and the children’s supply materials
has been completed. We have implemented a system, which will keep track of the supplies on hand and
includes a directory as to the location of materials. With the implementation of this program I expect that we
shall know what is in stock at any given time and where it is housed.
th
B. The annual book sale was held on May 16. Phyllis Charbonneau, a member of the Friends
of the Columbia Heights Public Library, spent some time working with me on pricing retired first editions. We
checked Internet sources for Bookseller prices for these titles and reduced them 40% for the book sale. It was
something of a time consuming project but appeared to be worthwhile.
IV. MEETINGS
A. I attended the ICS Community Luncheon on May 23. It gave me an opportunity to see the
changes within the school and to talk with other community representatives about the Library. ICS principal
Katherine Lange was very complimentary of the Library and it’s role within the community her comments were
greatly appreciated. Kathy Kaiser, Valley View principal, was also in attendance and later mentioned to her
staff the role the library was playing in support of ICS. All in all it was a very positive luncheon.
B. Kathy Kaiser, principal of Valley View elementary, responded to a letter I sent area
principals with an invitation to address her staff at the final staff meeting for 2002. I accepted and spoke with
th
about 25 teachers on May 28 regarding the importance of summer reading. As a result of that meeting, Valley
View will be holding a summer reading celebration in the fall of 2002 to recognize those students who have
participated in this year’s summer reading program. I am hopeful that this kind of reinforcement will catch on
throughout the district and help to emphasize the importance of leisure reading to families within the
community. Joyce Bliss, Media Specialist for Valley View Elementary, will also see to it that an article
emphasizing the importance of summer reading appears in the final newsletter sent home at the end of this year.
C. I also held a meeting with the teens volunteering for the summer. That meeting was held on
rd
May 23. We established a schedule for the season and discussed the activities they will be participating in. A
number of the volunteers signed up to walk with staff in the Jamboree Parade. I will be forwarding those names
to the director along with the final schedule by the first week in June.
IV. STAFF
A. The staff of the Children’s Department has been very busy this month with preparations for
all the upcoming programs. Pages have prepared bulletin board pieces for use in the reading clubs, folded
brochures, cut apart flyers, counted and labeled reading records, labeled new shelving, processed incoming
book orders, shelved materials, and repaired books.
B. Library Aide Cristy Tombarge, aided in the reorganization of the storage areas, printed a
number of flyers related to upcoming programs, helped assemble crafts for Funtime and Crafts, and aided in
receiving new books.
C. Children’s Clerk, Kelly Olson prepared this month’s Sampler for printing, sent and received
several book orders, prepared two program posters for use in advertising in-house, and prepared flyers for
printing. Kelly also visited Kindergarten classes at two elementary schools.
