COLLECTION DEVELOPMENT A. QJ weeding has been completed. I will begin collection development in this area in May and expect it to continue through June. B. We have installed the new paperback shelving in the YA area of the department and shifted shelving units to the J paperback and EJ paperback sections. C. I placed an order for additional titles of EJ and J paperbacks (those high demand copies) to upgrade the areas before the summer. I have another small order to do before this project is complete. D. The status of the weeding schedule thus far this year is: January: J630-J635 completed 2001 J650-659 completed 2001 J710-J719 incomplete J 745-J749 incomplete February Easies E-G incomplete Readers complete 2001 (requires upgrading to replace old titles) March J000-099 incomplete J400-499 incomplete J pbs complete 2002 April J 310-399 completed 2001 Yapbs completed 2002 May J Fic EJ fic completed 2002 YA fic I plan on continuing the weeding of these areas with the help of the new library aide Cristy Tombarge. I expect to be caught up to the schedule by the end of June. III. PROJECTS A. Reorganization of the storage areas on the lower level continues. We have completed the storytime collection and Cristy Tombarge has entered all materials into Excel documents for easy access and organization. She has also developed new labels for the storage units. She and the pages will be re-labeling the storage containers over the next couple of weeks. Christy and I will begin developing Excel documents for the supply storage areas during May. B. Fundraising continued this month with the annual Heights Theater/National Library Week Program. Heights native and Hollywood screenwriter Pat Proft hosted this year’s program. The turn out was not as large as I had expected, possibly due in part to the weather and also due to several major celebrations being conducted within the city on the same date. On the up side however the Library received some very good press from the local paper the FOCUS which carried a front page story on the program and also from the Sunday Star Tribune which had a small article in the Variety section and a follow up interview with Pat Proft in the Monday edition. C. The Children’s Department received several donations of funds this month. ICS donated $2,500 to the Children’s Department from their gaming account, and an anonymous donor gave $800.00 toward Children’s Services in honor of his mother. st D. I have been checking library 1 edition titles against Internet bookseller listings to determine pricing st for the upcoming book sale. This year, for the first time we will be offering 1 editions at a 40% reduction in recommended pricing. We currently have 8 bins of first editions that have been priced in this manner. E. The Director and I met with District 13 Media Specialists early this month. We discussed the upcoming summer programs, the potential for increased cooperation between the schools and the library in the th promotion of reading, and the possibility of a cooperative program for the 75 anniversary of the Library. As a result of this meeting I sent a letter to the principals requesting a meeting to discuss potential programs in support of reading as a leisure activity. I am scheduled to meet with the Valley View staff the end of May but have not heard from the remaining principals. Class visits to area elementary schools are scheduled for May 28, 29, and 31. IV. STAFF A. The director and I interviewed several potential candidates for the summer aide position. B. Pages produced bulletin boards for National Library Week; relabeled the paperback shelving, relabeled the storytime storage units, completed transactions on the QJ non-fiction, and began work on the Summer Reading Club materials. C. Children’s Department Clerk, Kelly Olson, produced 3 new booklists with the help of evening supervisors, produced the April edition of the Sampler, supplied promotional letters to those children attending field trips, prepared text for upcoming summer brochure, sent and received 3 book orders, aided in preparations for National Library Week, and attended the National Library Week Fundraiser.
