Operational Report, April 2002
April 25, 2002
Programs:
A. Friends: The Friends of the Library met for dinner and a meeting on Monday, April 1, at 5:30
p.m. at the Keys Restaurant in Spring Lake Park, MN. They discussed the book sale and signed
up for the work time slots. They also addressed the problems that occurred last year on the
sorting day when some Friends members abused the privilege, which allowed them to purchase
books before the pre-sale. The problems occurred when some of the Friends were stockpiling
books while sorting and when the Friends purchased many of the ;;best" books before the pre-
sale. To solve this problem they voted to allow Friends only to purchase books at the advertised
pre-sale time at the same time the public does who have paid the $5.00 admission fee. The
Friends with paid memberships will still be allowed into the pre-sale free of charge.
They voted to combine the treasurer and membership offices into one position. Gloria Tarmann,
treasurer, has agreed to do both these jobs.
President, Nancy Rathbun, has been asked to serve on the ACL steering committee to start a
Friends organization.
At home service: Four at home patrons requested book deliveries. They were delivered by
Sandi Engquist.

C. Bulk Loans: I selected books and processed them for delivery to Park View Villa and Heights
Manor on Wednesday, April 3.
Collection development:
A. Collection Development: I began the selection of new books on tape for the library and hope to
place an order by the first week in May.
Projects and goals:
A. Tax forms: The last day of the tax season was a very busy one with many people rushing into
the library to get forms. Debra Patrin volunteered to work from late afternoon to closing to assist
people. I dismantled the tax form display and took down the tables on April 16th. Next year, I
will order only the forms that are most requested and needed.
B. National Library Week: National Library Week, April 14-20 was celebrated with the theme:
Read & Bloom ~ your library. A prize drawing and guess contest were held and bookmarks and
seed packets given away in the adult section. Prizes were gardening gloves for men and women
to reflect the NLW theme.
C. Graphics: I created and displayed a bulletin board with the theme: Read & Bloom ~ your
library.
D. Book sale: During the month, I designed flyers and signs to promote the Book Sale on Thursday,
May 16. I also wrote news releases on the sale and submitted them to the Focus, Northeaster, and
Star Tribune. The City and Northeast State Bank were also contacted to publicize the sale on
their marquees.
E. Supply ordering: I completed orders for copy paper, book covers, recycling containers, and
miscellaneous office and book supplies.
F. Book displays: Many new books were added to both the fiction and non-fiction new book
displays. The display of quilting books continued through this month.
