PROGRAMS Class visits from Immaculate Conception School continued this month. Eight classes are receiving a monthly shipment of books for use in their classrooms. II. COLLECTION DEVELOPMENT A. Phase one of the audiocassette inventory has been completed. We are now awaiting the return of those items in circulation to verify the status of the tapes. By the current count we have lost about 100 tapes (most are charged/assumed lost). The collection size currently totals 470 books on tape. This collection circulated 5061 items in 2001. I am reluctant to add to this collection, however as I feel the tape medium is becoming outdated and would prefer to add books on CD to the collection. The cost at this time is prohibitive and the CD’s remain a high theft item. Therefore, I plan to add to the tape collection (possibly duplicating the high circ titles) for at least the next two years. B. We have begun weeding of the paperback collections in preparation for the summer rush and Friends book sale. The paperback collection has been growing in size and popularity over the last two years with circulation from these areas totaling 10,722 items in 2001. I am reluctant to weed too deeply within this portion of the collection, as we will be able to use these items over the summer months when our usage increases. I am considering storing some of the titles until the summer or if possible moving 3-4 of the series title to other shelving but shelving is in short supply. C. The EJ fiction Collection was updated via a B&T order placed this month. The EJ paperback collection is on the top of the list for February to update and replace paperback titles that are worn out. D. The staff of the Children’s Department aided the Library Director in the clean up and reorganization of the magazine storage area including the weeding of the magazine collection. Preparations are underway to house the historical collection of Focus newspapers. III. PROJECTS A. Storytime begins February 5. Our winter schedule was advertised as once a week (Tuesday mornings) @10:00a.m. We have expanded to include Wednesday mornings and possibly Thursday. At this time we have a total of 29 confirmed registrations and are waiting confirmation on an additional 15. B. Winter Reading Club began this month. We have 53 registrations for this program to date. In my analysis of circulation, I concluded that this program does not appear to be influencing the circulation of materials. I am considering making some changes in the program next year. C. Summer performers have been booked: June 11 Teddy Bear Band June 18 Kenwood Puppet Company June 25 Bruce the Magic 1 July 2 no performance July 9 Dazzling Dave YO YO Extraordinaire July 16 Kit and Kaboodle July 23 Dave Walbridge July 30 Bob Gasch August 6 Half Pint and Oscar Children’s Clerk Kelly Olson is in the process of sending out contracts etc. D. Planning for the 2002 LIBRA program began this month. I met twice with ACL representatives to plan the program. The theme for 2002 will be Let’s all go to the… The program will focus on those activities that teens find important in their lives (movies, snacks, malls, video arcade and ball games). Trivia questions will come from these 5 areas. The committee meets again in February. IV. STAFF A. Children’s library aide Michelle Smith resigned on January 25, 2002 citing health problems. B. Library Clerk, Kelly Olson, placed and received four book orders during January. She typed and produced the layout for the library newsletter the Sampler; aided in the clean up of the magazine storage area, discarded back issues of magazines and is in the process of updating the union lists of magazine holdings. Kelly also produced the winter reading club promotional materials, and aided the director in the production of the city’s annual report. C. Again we have kept the pages busy this month. Pages aided in the production of the bulletin board, removed the discarded magazines, shifted the J non-fiction collection, relabeled the easy picture book shelving and folded numerous promotional items.
