December operational report

I. BUILDING MAINTENANCE
A. Water leaked through the west basement wall in the magazine storage room 12/6. Because
the weather has been so mild, the ground water is not frozen. Some magazines were lost.
B. Fidelity Cleaners polished the activity room floors 12/12.
C. The alley was repaired 12/12. New concrete was poured and an apron-like extension added
between the alley and the side of the building.
D. Orkin performed routine pest maintenance 12/12.
E. The windows were cleaned 12/18.
II. COLLECTION
A. Two collection development projects have been completed in the adult non-fiction. Titles
have been added to the 300’s and 600’s.
B. Year-end orders of audiocassettes, compact discs, videos, and books have all been received.
C. The microfilm subscription for the Star/Tribune has been renewed for one year.
III. EQUIPMENT
A. Paul installed a scanner next to Kelly’s workstation 12/5.
B. Staff tried to install an internal modem on the pc in the office 12/6. It was not compatible
with B&T Link and had to be removed. Paul Grosse is working with B&T’s Tech Support
to find out what internal modem will work.
C. The Buckstaff table for the new portals in the Children’s Department has been ordered.
IV. PROGRAMS
A. The Friends met 12/3 with 8 members in attendance.
B. The Board met 12/4 with 5 members present.
C. Two sessions of holiday story and crafts were held 12/5 and 12/12.
D. 34 books were collected for Project Bookshelf and two bags of toys for SACA. Ralph and
Estelle Nelson picked up all the items on 12/14 and delivered them to SACA.
E. The bulk loan was delivered to the schools 12/20.
V. AUTOMATED CIRCULATION SYSTEM
A. Becky met with Jim Hendricks, Head of Reference at Northtown, 12/4 to receive training on
the electronic databases available on the new Portals.
B. Becky gave a brief introduction on the Portals to the full-time staff 12/4 and 12/5.
C. The electronic databases were up and down 12/19 because of problems with one of the
telecommunication lines.
VI. STAFF
A. Mindy Hicks, Dan Kleinfehn and Regina Jesse passed their page tests 12/4 and have started
working on the regular schedule.
B. Mary conducted a walk-through inspection with Fidelity Cleaners 12/6.
C. Mary attended the Golden Age holiday luncheon 12/6.
D. Becky helped grade the CSO essays 12/7.
E. Becky met with Mark Trunzo, the Library’s Baker & Taylor representative, on 12/18. He
will assist Paul in finding the correct internal modem needed to run B&T Link on the office
pc.
F. Marsha attended a meeting on Word 2000 12/19 to discuss issues staff has found in using
various parts of the program.
G. The supervisor and page schedules for winter 2002 have been distributed.
VII. MISC
A. The last MELSA survey for 2001 was conducted 12/4. These surveys are used to calculate
crossover use and to modify reimbursement formulas.

B. 828 40 Ave. N.E. was burned by the Columbia Heights Fire Department as a training
exercise 12/8. This event has raised many questions and rumors amongst the patrons.
Many thought it was an accidental fire.
C. The staff attended the City Holiday Party 12/11. Jeanine received her 15-year service award.
D. The Library closed at 5:00 p.m. on Monday, December 31.
E. The articles to form a foundation have been filed by the Library Board. By-laws have been
drafted and discussed.
F. The City Council approved the 2002 Library budget 12/3. The part-time clerk position was
reinstated for fiscal year 2002 and has been posted for applications.
