Rebecca Loader, Library Director SUBJECT: October operational report DATE: October 31, 2001 I. BUILDING MAINTENANCE A. Honeywell had service calls on the HVAC units 10/3 and 10/18. B. Orkin performed a routine maintenance call 10/10. C. Graffiti was discovered in the men’s room 10/10. Because of its extensive nature and symbolism, a police report was filed. D. The windows were washed 10/26. II. COLLECTION A. A paperback order was placed 9/28. B. The transaction project on the adult non-fiction audiocassettes was completed by the pages. C. The adult paperbacks were mended. D. The pages have started mending the adult 790-799’s section. E. A large order was placed with Collector Books. The publisher included several free titles with the shipment. F. Elaine completed a collection development project for areas of light coverage in the adult non-fiction. These adds have been ordered and added to the collection. G. The subscription to Reader’s guide to periodical literature has been cancelled for 2002. Infotrac will now be used as the library’s only magazine index. H. Marsha met with Jack Kubitz, Children’s Press and Capstone representative, 10/15. III. EQUIPMENT A. The Mita copier required a service call 10/10. IV. PROGRAMS A. The Friends met 10/1 with 5 members in attendance. B. The Library Board met 10/2 with five members present. They met with the City Council on the same day concerning the proposed 2002 Library budget. C. A field trip of ESL students visited the Library 10/3. D. The Columbia Heights 4-H Club set up a display on 4-H in the Children’s department 10/5. E. Ten sessions of preschool storytime were held during the month. th F. Winnie-the-Pooh’s 75 birthday was celebrated 10/17 with a party and program in the Children’s Department. G. Becky and Marsha made a presentation at the City Council meeting of 10/22 about the th November 13 Barnes and Noble Bookfair and fundraiser. H. The bulk loan to the schools was delivered 10/25. I. Steve from the Cable tv company filmed the Polish-American heritage display at the Library on 10/26. He will use some of the footage in a program he is producing. J. Marsha presented special programs for two visiting Headstart groups 10/29. V. AUTOMATED CIRCULATION SYSTEM A. Metro Communications strung five new runs of cable for the pac upgrade on 10/8. B. The upgrade to the pac’s was approved by the City Council. The hardware and software have been ordered for installation in November. VI. STAFF A. Interviews for the vacant page positions were held 10/3 –10/4. Conditional offers of employment were made to three candidates and two accepted. After the background checks are completed, page training will start. B. A proposed 2003 pay schedule for part-time Library employees has been submitted for consideration at the Council Meeting of 11/13. The proposed raises would be effective January 1, 2003. C. Becky met with Jane Kuschel, Library Director for the City of South St. Paul on 10/18, to discuss operations, procedures, and funding as independent public libraries. D. Rachel celebrated her two-year anniversary as a page in October. E. Nick celebrated his six-months anniversary as a page during the month. F. Marsha attended the summer reading club meeting at the County 10/23. G. Becky met with the City Manager and the Finance Director on 10/24 about the next edition of the City Newsletter. H. Becky attended the Public Service meeting at the County 10/25. I. Staff judged the Fire Safety Poster Contest 10/26 and picked some great winners. J. Jeanine participated in a cable shoot 10/30. K. Gail Olson from the Northeaster interviewed Marsha and Becky 10/31 for a feature article on the proposed foundation and the Barnes and Noble fundraiser. VII. MISC A.
