I. PROGRAMS
A. OPEN HOUSE AT AREA SCHOOLS
Staff participated in the open houses at all elementary schools and Central Middle School. We
designed a series of recommended reading booklists to distribute throughout the evening. The
booklists consisted of titles arranged by grade level. Michelle Smith, and Kelly Olson assisted and
represented the library at Valley View and North Park Elementary Schools. As a part of the program
we took registrations for new library cards and received a total of 53 library card applications. We
also held prize drawings at each location and received a total of 237 entries for these drawings.
B. CLASS VISITS RESUME
ICS class visits resumed this month. The 2001-2002 schedules include nearly every class from K-8.

C. BULK LOAN
Bulk loan to area schools resumed on September 25. Our thanks to the police department for the
loan of a CSO and van to make the deliveries.
II. COLLECTION
A. Collection development of the J500’s has been completed. This section was heavily weeded and
an order for new materials placed. J500’s should now be up to date. I also completed updating
the J970’s - J999’s (American History) and placed an order for new materials.
B. Weeding of the Easy collection continues. ACL has forwarded a long list of items to be
considered for possible discard. We will be checking these items over the next month. I
anticipate this project to take at least 2 months.
C. Michelle Smith, Children’s Department Clerk, has begun inventory of the Easy, J and YA
audiocassettes. This is a time consuming project and will take several months. At the close of
the project we will be purchasing replacement books (audio book/ tape combinations) and tapes
to update the collection.
III. PROJECTS
A. FOUNDATION FUNDRAISER
Staff has begun preparations for a library fundraiser in conjunction with Barnes & Noble. The event
th
is scheduled for November 13 from 5pm to 8pm. Thus far we have developed vouchers for
distribution, news articles, flyers, and a series for suggested gift lists for distribution to library
patrons. We are working on packets to be distributed to clubs and organizations and plans for the
actual event. I met with the library’s Friends organization to request their help with the promotion of
the event and also requested that the friends provide a token gift for those people that make a
donation that evening. Preparations will continue throughout October with a final update by the first
week in November.
B. TEEN READ WEEK/MONTH
ACL and COH are cooperating in a program aimed at getting teens to use the library during the
month of October. We are calling the program one life many worlds Sweepstakes. The
Sweepstakes program allows each teen (ages 13 to 19) the opportunity to enter a drawing for some
very nice prizes, every time they use the library and check out materials. First prize is a $50.00 gift
nd
certificate to Best Buy, 2 prize is (5) $30.00 gift certificates to Best Buy, third prize is (30) $20.00
th
gift certificates to Barnes and Noble and 4 prize is free passes to the movie theater. All prizes will
be awarded the first week in November.
C. WINNIE THE POOH’S BIRTHDAY
th
The library will be celebrating Pooh’s birthday on October 17 from 3 to 4:30 in the afternoon. A
reception is being planned which will include lemon, ginger & honey cookies and, of course, honey
lemonade. Game will be prevalent including connect the dots, pinning the tail on Eeyore, a coloring
table, make your own bookmarks, and filmstrips of the escapade in the Thousand Acre Wood.
IV. STAFF
A. Pages have been relabeling the easy shelves, catching up on shelf reading, aiding in the bulletin
board preparations, folding booklists and flyers and shelving materials.
B. Kelly Olson, Children’s Department Clerk Typist, sent and received four major book orders this
month, developed layout and design for nine booklists and materials for foundation promotion,
represented the library at the North Park open house, aided in the bulk loan process and stepped
in to do book drop on Sunday, September 30 due to staff shortage.
C. Michelle Smith Children’s Department Aide, printed 9 booklists and the foundation promotional
materials, printed newsletters, represented the library at the Highland open house, and aided in
the bulk loan preparation. Michelle has also been instrumental in the weeding of the non-fiction
materials and in double-checking book orders before they go out.
