HomeMy WebLinkAboutOperational Report from Marsha To: M.Rebecca Loader, Library Director From: Marsha Tubbs, Children’s Librarian Subject: May Operational Report 2001 Date: May 29, 2001 I. PROGRAMS: A. CLASS VISITS continued this month for the last time in 2001. Classes returned books on May 7, 8, 14 and 16. Some of the classes received information regarding the summer reading clubs, others dropped off books and checked out new materials. BULK LOAN The last pick for this years bulk loan delivery was made on May 24. A special to Captain Roddy for his help on this project and a very special thanks to Gary the CSO who accompanied Kelly each month for the pick up and drop of materials. ICS made heavy use of this program during 2001. A number of teachers and parents commented appreciatively regarding the program both as to the range of excellent materials available to the students and to the convenience of the program. I do wish that the public school system could make use of this program but there seems to be a reluctance to “mix” the media centers and the public library too closely. C. TRIVIA TIME WARP LIBRA 2001 is underway. Materials arrived the week of May 21 and the -Children’s Department pages along with a volunteer have compiled the materials into sets for distribution. Alicia Andrews will again th be joining the staff on June 4 as the Children’s Department Program Aide for LIBRA. I did have an opportunity to check the circulation figures for our juvenile fiction collection and am happy to report that the increase in patron usage created through this program last summer has held throughout the year. We are circulating twice as many materials in our juvenile fiction areas as had been circulated in previous years. Our goal for this summer is to increase the number of participants in the program from 200 to 250. Staff goal for the summer will be to promote books through reader’s advisor. We will all be talking up great books and encouraging anyone who enters the department to “read for the FUN of it”. Those children registered in Trivia Time Warp who read 5 books this summer will be invited to a special end of the summer party at Heights Theater featuring a 3D movie and ice cream. Each week, 4 separate prizes will be given away and anyone who completes the entire series of Trivia Time Warp fun will earn a chance at the COWABUNGA prize drawing at the end of the summer. D. WOLFIN DOWN BOOKS @YOUR LIBRARY is the theme for the statewide summer reading program. All materials have arrived for this program and preparations are well underway. We will again offer three separate reading th levels (Read to Me, Rookie, and Pros). Registration will begin on June 8. I anticipate between 700 and 800 kids will register for this program during summer 2001. Weekly prizes will be awarded and the younger children will have an opportunity to select a small token from our treasure chest for every five books they read. Please note that we are the only library within the county that has not had a drop in registration for these reading programs. This is an indication that the program has the necessary components to make it attractive to children year after year and that the community prizes reading as a summertime activity for children. E. VOLUNTEERS At this time we have a total of five volunteers to cover the summer hours, we could use at least four more. I am hopeful that we will pick up a few more after school gets out. F. JAMBOREE PARADE The library entry in this years parade will include a float of storybook characters. The following staff members and Library Board members have signed up to participate in this year’s event: Becky Loader, Marsha Tubbs, Barb Kondrick, Nancy Soldatow, Andrea Carter, Michelle Smith, Catherine Vesley, Pat Sowada, and Kelly Olson. Some of our pages and volunteers are also considering participating. I am in the process of locating costumes and producing large oversized books (with Kelly Olson’s help) for the characters to carry. Jeanine Schmidt has agreed to collect pop, water, Gatorade, and a cooler. Richard Hubbard, library board member, will be driving and using his van to pull the 18’ trailer. Heights Theater has agreed to loan us four benches for use during the parade. I have two additional benches from home giving us a total of six to use for seating on the float. Possible storybook character representatives include: Cat in the Hat, The Wilder Family, Cinderella’s Godmother, Cruella DeVille- 101 Dalmatians, Mother Goose, Mrs. Piggle Wiggle, American Girl (possibly Felicity), Wizard (Sword in the Stone), Officer Buckle and Gloria, Charlottes Web, Betsy Tacy, Curious George and the Man in the Yellow Hat, DW and Arthur, and the Wizard of OZ. G. SUMMER STORYTIME AND CRAFTS begins on June 14 at 10:00. We have 24 registrations at this time. II. COLLECTION A. Easy weeding continued through the letter M. This has been a slow process but we have discarded a large number of unique entries, damaged materials, and low circulating items. The majority of these items were saved for the Friends Book Sale. B. Purchased additional copies of high circulating paperbacks in preparation for the summer demand. I also added series to the EJ (easy chapter books) in anticipation of the extremely high demand this area receives during the summer months. C. Placed a large B&T and a direct order to Capstone. The Capstone books are pricey ($18.00 on average) with a very small format and little text. They are very popular, however, nearly all the titles circulated immediately. Most patrons checked out a minimum of 5-6 at a time. We are fortunate that the Capstone donations we continue to receive from John Brosnahan, Evening Supervisor will help the budget keep up with this demand. The order I placed will complete the donated series up to the point of 2001 additions. III. PROJECTS A. The end of the Storytime Kits Project is in site. As soon as the county can establish which libraries will have holdings from the collection then the 80 kits will be linked and distributed. At this time it appears that RUM, NTN and MIS will be the holding libraries (though MIS is not definite yet). I anticipate the Kits will be in circulation by mid-June. IV. STAFF A. Clerk Typist, Kelly Olson assisted with volunteer training session, reprinted the Library surveys, received 2 large book orders, delivered the final bulk loan to the schools, delivered summer flyers and brochures to the schools, prepared information packets for volunteers, and attended the Crestview Senior Prom as a representative of the Library. B. Children’s Department Aide, Michelle assisted with weeding of the Easy collection (we have progressed to the M’s), photocopied a variety of materials including the summer reading club drawing slips, flyers, Sampler, and a number of internal forms. Michelle has also been helping with our delivery every Tuesday and Thursday morning during the absence of a circulation aide in the adult section. C. Pages in the Children’s Department have been busy preparing 3,000 flyers for distribution throughout the community. These flyers included information on summer programming and the book sale. They have begun preparations for Summer Funtime and Crafts, shifted the paperback collection, changed the shelf labels, removed marking and tape from the existing shelves, moved the audio cassettes collection to it’s new shelving unit.
