Class visits
I. PROGRAMS continued throughout the month. Spring is also the time for group Field Trips. The
Children’s Department hosted 4 field trips this month and each group was treated to their very own storytime.
Children then received their first library cards and checked out a book to take home to share with the family.

II. COLLECTION
A. Shifting of the following sections within the children’s department has been completed: EJ fiction, Audio Cassette tapes,
Reference, J fiction, EJ Paperbacks. We are preparing for the summer onslaught and hope that these changes in the location of certain
collections will open up the room a little and allow for less congestion in some areas.
Moving the EJ fiction into the J fiction area should help with “reader’s advisor” services to those kids that can read while expanding
their reading selections to include some larger chapter books.
B. Sent in a medium sized book order to B&T. This order has been received and is awaiting linking to the database.
C. Prepared another book order to include replacements of those frequently requested titles and worn out items. In many
cases (Madeline books, Arthur books, Clifford books and Franklin books) the titles are available only in paperback. The county is
adding these titles in multiples and has created a call number for them (Easy paperback). This grouping currently holds about 40 titles
but I anticipate that the collection size will grow partly due to the nature of the titles but also because it is an inexpensive means of
supplying “hot” titles to this age group.
D. Weeding is complete within the YA paperback collections and we have reached the letter I in the Easy weeding process.
Phyllis Charbonneau, a Friend of the Library, has been coming weekly to help with the straightening of shelves and shelf reading. She
has also begun pulling Board Books that are in disrepair. I will be considering these for discard in May. We will continue the Easy
Weeding Project throughout May and hope to complete it before the Friends Book Sale date of May 30.
E. Nancy Soldatow has completed the Booklists for ABC’s, 123’s. Pirates & Ships, Stories that Rhyme. Kelly Olson is in
the process of preparing the copy for publication. We should have copies for you within the week.
F. John Brosnahan is continuing on the collection development project for the J 600s and J 700s. As John locates materials
for inclusion in the collection I am processing the book order work slips. Once we have completed a section I will be reviewing the
suggested titles and recommending some for addition into the collection.
III. PROGRAMS
Storytime Kits
A. are now in their final process. All the kits have been packaged and cataloging adjustments made to the
booklets. Dawn at LSS is now making the final changes to the booklet copies and will be printing the full color booklets over the next
two to four weeks. After the booklets are matched to the kits then TSD will link them in the database and a date will be chosen to
unmask the entries. At this time there has been no final decision as to which buildings will be holding the collection. Columbia
Heights was asked if we would be interested, but we declined as we have no holding location for the collection that not publicly
accessible.
LIBRA
B. reading program materials were finalized this month. Anoka county Library has agreed to include Columbia
Heights in the printing costs for this program as well as any Programs that are brought into the county as a part of Teen Programming
for the year 2000. Funds were made available through a grant but must be encumbered by the end of August. Anoka County Library
made these offers a partial payment for the number of hours I have put in on both the LIBRA program and the Storytime Kits
program. The funds for teen programming are sorely needed and will put to good use.
Summer Reading Program (Minnesota Statewide).
C. Materials have arrived for the I have attached samples of the
reading records and books marks etc. This year’s theme “Wolfin Down Books at your Library” is exceptional and should be very
popular.
National Library Week Fundraiser
D. Our brought in over $600.00 for children’s services. Thank you to everyone that
attended and put out extra effort to make this program a success. A special thanks to Mayor Gary Peterson and Council Woman
Julienne Wyckoff for their participation in the opening event. Also, thanks to Jeanine Schmidt (ticket sales), Gary Boham (ticket
taking), and Kelly Olson (usher) for their efforts in making this project a success.
Jamboree Parade
E. plans are underway. This year’s Library entry will feature costumed characters from books. Members
of the Library Staff and Library Board have been asked to participate. Each individual will have the opportunity to select a character
from a storybook, develop a costume around the character and appear in the parade
reading the character’s book. We have secured a flatbed trailer and are looking for a vehicle to pull it.
IV. STAFF
A. We are reaching full staff and the change is noticeable. Materials are getting shelved on the required shift, shelf reading
is getting done on schedule (which means our shelves are in order), some of our projects are actually completed, others are in process
and will hopefully be completed sometime in May.
B. Training of new personnel took a good percentage of our time in April. Kelly Olson, Children’s Clerk Typist, trained our
new Circulation Clerk in the magazine processing, Internet usage, and paperback ordering process. She also trained the new pages in
Borrower on the ACS and the correct input of library card applications. I conducted training sessions in reference for both the pages
and the new circulation clerk. I also conducted the orientation session for the new pages in the Director’s absence. Nancy Soldatow,
evening supervisor, developed the copy for four new booklists for the department. Kelly Olson completed the set up and layout of the
booklists. Kelly also aided in the weeding of the readers and EJ fiction sections, prepared the copy for the Summer Reading Program
brochure and aided in the preparation of the final bulk loan delivery to area elementary schools.
C. The pages have been busy catching up on long overdue projects. They shifted the EJ fiction, J fiction and reference
collections to make room for addition EJ fiction and Books on Tape. The pages have begun preparation s for the summer reading
program, relabeled shelves following the shifting of the collection and shelved numerous carts of materials. They continue t work on
the mending of the easy books following the weeding of that section.
D. Michelle Smith continues to give support to the weeding of the easy materials, copies the newsletter and other inter office
memos, brochures and forms. She has also been processing the bulk loan materials, helping with ACL delivery and aiding at the
circulation desk.
