OUTREACH At the invitation of teacher, Renee Johnson, I addressed a Class at the High School on the topic of the importance of reading to preschoolers and infants. Thirty children and 2 adults attended the class. Response from the students was very favorable. II.COLLECTION A. BWI’S inactive listing for spring arrived. I checked the new titles they are carrying against our holdings and ordered replacements for the inactive series titles. B. We are in the process of putting all our shelves in order and shifting where necessary. Pages have shelf read J non-fiction and J fiction and Kelly Olson is preparing new and replacement shelf labels. I am considering moving the EJ fiction into the J fiction area. I think this would help the easy chapter book users make the transition into full chapter books. Our Easy chapter books are heavy circulation items and I think that positioning them closer to the J fiction might encourage the good readers to try something with a little more depth to it. C. I will be weeding YA paperbacks in April. D. Weeding of the Easy collection has continued through the letter E. We are discarding heavily from the Easies especially if the title is an only copy and has very low circulation. E. John Brosnahan is continuing with the collection development project in the J600’s and J700’s. I will be preparing a book order for upgrading this section sometime in April. F. Nancy Soldatow, evening supervisor, has begun developing booklists in three separate areas. a. Picture books about pirates, sailors and ship captains etc. b. ABC books c. Counting books d. Juvenile fiction in the areas of adventure and survival III. PROJECTS A. STORYTIME KITS are nearing completion. I will be meeting with Theresa Schroeder at LSS in April to set up the final printing process and to tie up the loose ends regarding the last 40 kits. B. LIBRA committee has been meeting for the last two months and has finalized a theme for 2001. This year’s teen reading program theme will be Trivia Time Warp. It will center around 5 sets of trivia questions relating to events from each of the last five decades. Teens will be asked to read five books over the summer. For each component of the program that they complete, participants will receive chances for weekly and end of the summer prize drawings. All participants who read 5 books over the summer will receive an invitation to a party in August. C. MINNESOTA STATE SUMMER READING CLUB (formerly Melsa Summer Reading Club). Materials have been ordered for this reading club, which will feature the artwork of illustrator Lane Smith. The theme for this year is Wolfin’ Down Books at Your Library. I will be meeting with the media specialists from the schools to discuss both of these reading programs on April 4. D. We have begun making plans for this year’s AMERICAN GIRL PARTY. Participants will be able to Meet Josephina on August 9. We will be taking registrations for around 40 girls beginning July 9. E. NATIONAL LIBRARY WEEK FUNDRAISER. The Heights Theater is again this year hosting a fundraiser for the Library on April 1. The event will include the showing of Laurel and Hardy’s film “Way out West”, a film short of the Little Rascals and some vintage cartoons and trailers. Library staff will be there to greet the public along with representatives from the City and the Library Board. IV. STAFF A. PAGES have been busy with the basics but I am happy to say that we are getting back to full staff and I expect to see things shaping up fairly quickly. They helped with the bulletin board for National Library Week and have been shelf reading the collection. Mending of the Easy collection has progressed through the letter C (slightly behind the weeding process). The Pages also processed the new book orders this month. B. CHILDREN’S CLERK. Kelly Olson has begun developing a series of mailing lists, produced the layouts and typesetting for the Volunteer posters and flyers, the fundraiser, and the national library week materials. She aided in the production of the bulletin board for National Library Week and helped with the weeding of the easy collection.. She also conducted three storytimes this month while I was on vacation. In addition, Kelly received training on the SCALA from Jeanine Schmidt and attended a daylong workshop at Municipals. C. LIBRARY AIDE, Michelle Smith has been busy with deliveries every Tuesday and Thursday, Bulk Loans, discharging materials and putting carts in order and photocopying. As soon as the replacement for Shari Briley comes on board Michelle will be adding filing and a part of the book ordering process to her tasks as she steps down from the task of deliveries.
