Rebecca Loader, Library Director SUBJECT: March operational report DATE: March 29, 2001 I. BUILDING MAINTENANCE A. The windows were cleaned 3/13. B. Heights Electric repaired a faulty light switch in the activity room 3/13. C. New cleaners were assigned to the Library by Fidelity on 3/20. D. Water leaked through the west wall of the basement on 3/21. Public Works added flexible hose to the down spouts for a temporary water diversion. The alley repair will take place in summer 2001. II. COLLECTION A. Replacements for missing compact discs were ordered. B. A trial standing order of large-print non–fiction and adventure fiction has been placed. If the response is high, the order could become permanent. C. Videos were ordered and received. III. EQUIPMENT A. Marsha reported a chemical smell in the basement on 3/16. Public Works crews checked out the sump pumps and the hydro-pump in the elevator shaft. Schindler responded to a service call on 3/19 and re-set the ground switch on the hydro pump. The source of the chemical smell was not identified. IV. PROGRAMS A. The Friends met 3/5 with 11 members present. Becky presented the 2001 Wish List to the group. B. The Board met 3/6 with five members present. C. Becky attended the City Council work session on 3/5 to discuss progress on the proposed new building. D. Nine session of preschool storytime were held in March with a total attendance of 158 children and 54 adults. E. Kelly delivered Library materials to Valley View and Highland schools to use for their Kindergarten Round-ups. F. Redeemer Lutheran Pre-School visited the Library for a special field trip 3/19. G. The bulk loan was delivered on schedule 3/22. H. Winter Reading Programs ended 3/24. I. Marsha made a presentation on reading to Renee Johnson’s class 3/26. J. Two field trips for Headstart were presented 3/27. K. The revised MN. Reciprocal Borrowing Agreement was approved by the Columbia Heights Public Library Board. V. AUTOMATED CIRCULATION SYSTEM A. The Internet server for the public browsers was down for most of the day 3/22. B. The renewal of the automation contract was approved at the City Council Meeting 3/26. VI. STAFF A. Library Clerk Shari Alexon’s last day at the Library was 3/2. B. Interviews for the Library Clerk position were held 3/13. Two candidates were invited back for second interviews on 3/19 and 3/20. A conditional offer of employment has been made to one candidate. C. Alicia Cermak passed her page test 3/14 and has started working a regular schedule the week of 3/19. D. Marsha attended a Summer Reading Club meeting on 3/15. E. Kelly attended Municipals on 3/16. F. Interviews were held 3/21 and 3/22 for the vacant page positions. G. Marsha attended a Libra meeting 3/26. H. Jeanine participated in a cable shoot 3/27. I. John Brosnahan, part-time Library Supervisor, completed eighteen months of employment 3/28. VII. MISC A. Firefighters from the Columbia Heights Fire Department assisted Marsha with pre-school storytime on 3/14 and 3/15. B. 911 was called 3/20 for a scissors laceration to Katy Oftedahl’s finger. C. A proclamation in honor of National Library Week was presented to Barb Miller and Pat Sowada, Columbia Heights Public Library Trustees, at the City Council meeting 3/26. D.
