COLLECTION A. BOOK ORDERS were processed twice this month. Larger orders were placed for new materials in all areas of the collection. The largest percentages of new books were placed for the easy picture book collection and board book collection. Both areas have received favorable comments from library users. B. WEEDING of the easy picture books continued. With the addition of a Library Aide for the Children’s Department, we have been able to keep this project on schedule. The goal is to have this collection weeded and discards available for sale at the friends’ annual sale in May. C. COLLECTION DEVELOPMENT in the J600’s continues. John Brosnahan has been working on this project as a part of his Saturday Supervisor hours in the department. He has progressed through J650. D. PUBLISHER’S REPRESENTATIVE, Jack Kubitz met with me on February 27. We will be purchasing materials from him in the next book orders. Jack reps for Econo-clad which has been a major part of my collection development strategy for the last 2-3 years. However, Econo-clad’s latest catalog shows major jumps in pricing. Jack offered to increase his discount for us. I will be investigating the price increases with John Brosnahan during March and getting back to Jack about his discount offer. III. PROJECTS A. STORYTIME KITS project continues in conjunction with Anoka County Library. All 80 kit folders are now in the hands of the typist. Thirty some kit themes have been catalogued. The catalogued entries are masked to the public but can be accessed from staff terminals. Cataloging will continue to create entries as the kits are assembled. Sometime in April myself and one or two members of the committee will meet again to oversee final changes in the Kits Booklets. Booklets will then be printed and forwarded to TSD for barcoding and labeling. I anticipate this projected to be completed by June 1, one year after it began. B. CHASE The Library’s grant request has received a verbal OK from Cindi Willprecht of Columbia Heights Parks and Recreation. The Chase Steering Committee will meet in April to finalize the process. stst C. 21 CENTURY I received a call from Kristen Gast, 21 Century Coordinator, regarding the grant application I placed through them for LIBRA. She and Judy Yantos are in the midst of planning the summer programming and will get back to me shortly with a final decision regarding the grant request. D. LIBRA I have been meeting with the LIBRA committee over the last two months. This year’s Teen reading program will be “Trivia Time Warp”. The program centers around the solutions to Trivia questions derived from each of the last 5 decades. Teens will be asked to read 5 books over the summer and will be given the opportunity to win prizes. I am working with the Heights Theater to present a 3D movie at summers end as a reward for all who read 5 books. IV. STAFF A. Pages in the department completed these tasks this month: re-labeling of the JPB, EJPB racks, processed two large book orders, continued the weeding of the easy materials, and of course shelved many books. B. After completing 20 hours of training, Library Aide Michelle Smith began working 14 hours a week in the Children’s Department. Michelle has been discharging materials, readying carts for shelving, filing and photocopying for the last two weeks. Her presence has made it possible for Kelly and I to spend more time with the patrons and the collection. This position is greatly appreciated. C. Children’s Clerk, Kelly Olson, ordered and received two large book orders, received training on magazine labeling; Internet usage counts, ordering of paperbacks. She also completed the circulation statistical data sheets for the last 12 years and aided in the bulk loan distribution to ICS.
