PROGRAMS A. ICS class visits continued throughout the month of December. WORKSHOPS Storytime Sharing Workshop A. Kelly, I and Patty Wheeler Andrews attended the conducted by MELSA. The workshop received positive comments from all who attended. This type of program provides an arena for all MELSA libraries to share the most successful aspects of their storytimes. I was surprised to see that the latest thing in programming is “baby times” or storytime for infants 5 to 24 months. If this trend continues I believe Columbia Heights Public Library will be adding it to our list of regular programs. I appreciate the opportunity to attend these programs and find the information invaluable and the insight into new possibilities exhilarating. II. COLLECTION A. We have completed the weeding of the JPB’s. Relabeled the J paperback, and EJ paperback racks along with the Easy shelving. The YA paperback collection is in the process of being weeded. With John Brosnahan’s help we have begun weeding the J600’s in preparation for upgrading of that section in January. B. We will begin weeding of easy materials by month end. I anticipate that this project will take the better part of the next 5 months to complete. Weeding of this section will be based on the number of circs per item and the condition of the book. I expect to find a number of well-loved items that are in need of discarding. This section is on my list as the next section needing an upgrade. III. PROJECTS Storytime kits A. The project continues in cooperation with Anoka County Library. Text copy is being forwarded to clerical staff on the county level for typesetting within templates (layouts) produced by Kelly Olson, Children’s Clerk. The layouts will be bound and eventually become a part of each Kit. Goal for completion of this portion of the project is late April. The committee will be meeting again in February to put together the first 40 Kits and booklets. Winter Reading Program B. preparations are underway. Credit for this year’s theme, visuals, and prize ideas go to Mary Kloss, Adult Services Specialist. Bookmarks to “mark the spot where you fell asleep” will accompany the theme, “Hot Reads for Cold Nights”, along with “Tuck Me In” sign off cards, and of course, reading logs. Prizes will include packets of hot chocolate and peppermints for that little extra cozy touch. CHASE grant C. programs came to a conclusion this year with the Teen Read Week programs in October. I returned approximately $5,900.00 of the original grant figure back to the CHASE accounts. The following graph illustrates the costs of each program, the programs expenditures and the approximate balance per each program. Please note that the entire allotment for the Coffehouse program has been returned. Due to the library’s current staff shortages and the increase in departmental assignments related to a potential move of the building, it didn’t seem to be prudent to attempt a project of this proportion at this time. However, I have submitted a new mini-grant application to CHASE for possible funding of the LIBRA program in 2001. The CHASE steering committee will take up the issue of the application in January at their regular meeting. Preparations for are underway. The program begins February 6 and th continues through March 29 . We will have three sessions each week on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursday mornings at 10:00am. Registration begins January 8the 2001. summer programming E. Preparations for will begin in January 2001. These will include Super Tuesdays, Summer Storytime, and American Girl, Library Kids Lead the Way reading club and Libra reading program. On -line training F. continues in Excel and Word. Kelly Olson and I have both completed Word training through Level 2, Kelly has also begun Excel training and has completed level I in this program. IV. STAFF A. Pages continue to spend the largest portion of their time shelving. Shelf reading is still the priority after shelving but there is precious little time left to spend putting shelves in order. I am concerned that once the “heavy” usage returns in February and March, the children’s department will have a backlog of shelving on a daily basis. B. Kelly Olson, children’s clerk, spent time this month training Jeanine Schmidt, adult clerk on Quark Express, and Shari Alexon, circulation clerk on the acquisitions portion of the ACS. Kelly th , also attended the MELSA storytime workshop on December 7 continued her own on-line training, finished ordering and receiving books for 2000, finished the BWI standing order, began converting ledgers to Excel.
