November operational report

I. BUILDING MAINTENANCE
A. The pay phone in the lobby was removed by mistake and re-installed on 11/1.
B. A new analog telephone line was installed on 11/15 to be used as carrier for 911 calls from
the Library. The separate line will aid in identifying the location of the call for the
dispatchers.
C. Public Works repaired the railing on the interior stairwell and replaced light bulbs 11/21.
II. COLLECTION
A. The last compact disc and audiocassette orders for 2000 were placed.
B. The last large book order for 2000 was placed.
III. EQUIPMENT
A. The Mita departmental copier was repaired 11/3.
B. The Toshiba public copier was repaired 11/22.
C. NSP installed an antenna in the basement 11/22 to be used with a new meter which can be
read remotely.
IV. PROGRAMS
A. The Library Board met 11/1 with all members present.
B. Mary conducted tours of the Library for ESL classes on 11/2 and 11/9.
C. The Friends met 11/6 with 10 members present.
D. Eights session of storytime were held in November with a total attendance of 149 children
and 65 adults.
E. The last two sessions of Twilight Tales were held 11/7 and 11/14.
F. National Children’s Book Week was celebrated 11/13 – 11/18, with the theme, “Fuel Your
Mind.” Special contests and prizes were available in the Children’s Department.
G. Marsha conducted two special programs for Head Start on 11/30.
H. The bulk loan to the schools was delivered 11/30.
V. AUTOMATED CIRCULATION SYSTEM
A. No changes.
VI. STAFF
A. Marsha attended the Anoka County Library public service meeting on 11/2.
B. Elaine has worked extra daytime hours during the month to cover staff absences and to
provide help on special projects.
C. Interviews were held for the vacant page positions. A conditional offer of employment was
made and rejected. Advertising will resume after the holidays.
D. Marsha attended a MELSA sponsored workshop on storytelling 11/28.
E. Jeanine participated in a cable shoot 11/28.
F. Becky met with the City Attorney 11/29 to work on the draft of the Heritage Preservation
Ordinance.
VII. MISC
A. Marsha is chairing an Anoka County committee that is selecting materials to be included in
storytime kits which will circulate to corporate card holders. This project is being funded by
a grant.
B. Becky is serving on an Anoka County committee to revise and to update the Technology
Plan. Columbia Heights is included in the plan for the Library WAN and the City LAN.
Submission of the plan is required so that the Library can receive State RLTA money
through MELSA, which pays for the public Internet connection.
C. A MELSA survey was conducted 11/15.
D. Becky met with Bob and Mark (owners of the Columbia Heights Mall), the Mayor, and the
City Manager on 11/15 to discuss the possibility of purchasing a section of the Mall to be
used as a location for the Library. Bill Elrite prepared a comparison of costs based on lease
versus purchase options based on a twenty year time period. Barb Miller and Becky
attended the City Council work session 11/20 to hold a preliminary discussion with the
Council. The matter has been referred back to the Library Board for input. A special Board
meeting on the subject is being scheduled for December.
