SUBJECT:September 2000 Operational Report
I.Programs
A.Volunteer Recognition reception. Three of eight volunteers attended the reception this year.
Each volunteer received a certificate of recognition and a New York Public Library student
planner. The certificates were presented by Library Board President Barbara Miller. We need to
look at changing this program in the future. The board meeting falls on the first day of school,
making it difficult for students and parents to attend.
IICollection
A.We began collection development in the J600's. This section is probably our heaviest hit non-
fiction area for circulation. We will be discarding old materials and ordering new titles (1999-
2000).
B.Children’s Clerk-Typist, Kelly Olson has begun weeding readers. Updated titles (1999-2000) are
available at a very reasonable cost throughout Econoclad and I will be preparing an order for new
materials. Our Readers are used heavily by parents of children just learning to read. Public
comments have been favorable for this collection but it is in need of new material.
IIProjects
A.Development of storytime kits continues. The first set of book orders were placed this month. I
have begun developing files to house each theme’s activities and finger plays. I anticipate three
meetings with various committee members during the month of October.
B.I have been asked to participate as a storyteller in the School District’s grand reopening on
October 16. Preparations are underway and plans are being finalized.
C.October hosts Teen Read Week (ALA). The library will be sponsoring a number of activities
aimed at getting teens to “Take Time to Read for the Fun It.” With the help of Jean Kuehn,
Special Projects Coordinator for the City, our local cable station Public Service Announcements
will be featuring local High School celebrities. Each spot either promotes reading or libraries and
ends with the statement: “It’s not just for kids anymore”. The library will sponsor a 2-Minute
Mystery writing contest and a poetry contest. Teens will be encouraged to visit the library after
school, meet friends, and join in board game tournaments and play.
IV. Staff
A.Clerk-Typist, Kelly Olson received two major book orders during September, prepared materials
for the 2000 bulk loan program, reorganized corporate cards for 2000, and produced flyers and
posters for Twilight Tales and Fall Storytime.
B.Due to our current staff shortage, the page assigned to the department has had little time for
projects beyond shelving. The staff shortage will become a very real problem by the end of
October when large numbers of materials will be returned following class visits and bulk loan
rotations.
