III. COLLECTION
A. Completed the collection development of the J500's. Placed orders for replacement materials.
This project was a necessary task but very expensive. Science materials for children are averaging
$25.00 to $30.00 per title. This section gets a lot of use throughout the year both for general
interest and research. I feel the cost was warranted but had to sacrifice in other areas to make the
purchases.
B. We will be starting collection development in the J 600's during the month of September. I
expect to complete this section by March of 2001.
C. Weeding of the collection took a back seat to programs over the summer. With the help of
Children’s Clerk Typist, Kelly Olson, we will resume weeding with the easy readers and board
books during September.
IV. PROJECTS
A. Work continues on the Storytime Kits project. This is a cooperative project between
Columbia Heights Public Library and The Anoka County Library System. The committee has
completed step one of the project: the selection of titles for inclusion in the kits (5 books per kit,
total of 100 kits) and is now working on the selection of fingerplays and activities to accompany
the themes. I am hopeful that we will have the first book orders ready to fill by the end of
September. This project is very time intensive. We will be developing a set of files here at COH
for each of the 100 themes in an effort to maintain some organization while the packets are being
put together. The sub committees will be forwarding the materials to me throughout September.
B. The children’s department represented the Library at District 13 elementary school open
houses on August 31. Kelly Olson, Ann Harmel and myself manned tables at all three of the
elementary schools. Staff took 38 applications for library cards and 382 people registered for
prize drawings.
V. THANK YOU
A. This has been an exceptionally busy summer with a number of NEW programs and a large
measure of success in those programs. Since many of these programs were not accomplished
through the efforts of Library staff alone, I would like to officially thank those who helped to
make the summer a success. Thank you to Kristen Gast and Sharon Edholm at Columbia Heights
Community Education for their help on the Harry Potter Party and My Teacher Storytime. Thank
you to Cindi Willprecht and the Parks and Recreation Department for their help on the Puppeteer
Workshop. Thank you to Jean Kuehn for all her time and efforts in video taping our summer
programs ( American Girl, Harry Potter, Puppeteer Workshop and Super Tuesday Performers).
Thank you to Alicia Andrews for her help on the LIBRA reading programs and for her support
throughout the summer. And a special thanks to the staff and volunteers who lead by Kelly
Olson, who kept the department on track throughout a very busy season.
VI. Staff
A. Clerk Typist, Kelly Olson processed and received 3 separate book orders during the month of
August. She aided the Librarian in preparations for Harry Potter Party, American Girl Party, and
staffed a table at Highland Elementary School Open House.
B. Pages in the department shifted the non fiction and changed labels on the shelves, continued
mending the non fiction and aided in the preparations for August programs.
