Rebecca Loader, Library Director SUBJECT: June operational report DATE: June 29, 2000 I.BUILDING MAINTENANCE A.Twenty carpet tiles were replaced in the main floor lobby 6/6. B.Squeegee Pro, window washing contractor for the Library, has been sold. Hopefully the new owner will continue in the tradition of Nathan Lundholm for reliability and competence. C.Public Works seasonal crews weeded the Library yard by hand to get rid of some noxious weeds that had grown in the planting beds. II.COLLECTION A.A large order of easy and juvie fiction was placed in time to be processed for Summer Reading Club. B.Orders were placed for audio cassettes, compact discs, and book/tape combinations. C.Mending of the adult paperbacks was completed by the pages. D.The compact discs were cleaned. III.EQUIPMENT A.The water fountain on the main floor was repaired 6/14. B.The pages cleaned all the terminal keyboards. C.Video shelving has been ordered. D.Two Internet browsers have been ordered. IV.PROGRAMS A.The Friends conducted their annual booksale 6/1, with preview night on 5/31. They netted $991.60 at the sale and $165.00 for preview night tickets. The Library made $250.90. B.Becky and Shari set up a display honoring Harriet Blythe and the Silver Lake School Mothers’ Club 6/3. Vintage clothing and a mannequin were borrowed from the Anoka County Historical Society, and various period items were loaned by the staff. All the displays contained a connection to the red wagons used to collect the first materials for the Library in 1928. C.Marsha conducted a program for 12 ESL students 6/6. D.The Board met 6/6 with all members present. E.Eight volunteens started working in the Children’s Department 6/12. F.Three Super Tuesday programs were held: 1. 6/13 “Kit & Kaboodle”(49 adults, 171 children) 2. 6/20 “Norm Barnhart”(58 adults, 180 children) 3. 6/27 “Hoot ‘n Annie”(50 adults, 139 children) G.Three Funtimes were held: 1.6/15 “Summer( 9 adults, 22 children) 2.6/22 “Frogs”(12 adults, 32 children) 3.6/29 “Worms & Snakes”(10 adults, 31 children) H.The Library Board and staff participated in the Jamboree parade 6/23 with an entry of three motorized vehicles and the Red Wagon Brigade. Barb Miller, Marsha, and Shari were attired in 1928 garb, and approximately 25 red wagons were pulled along the parade route. Thanks to all for their hard work in making this event a success. I.Shari met with Evelyn Portland 6/29 to review some pictures for possible inclusion in the Columbia Heights history file. V.AUTOMATED CIRCULATION SYSTEM A.The ACS crashed on 6/26 when operators tried to combine the codes for the three closing buildings into one for the new building. DRA, the automation vendor, had to troubleshoot the system in order for it to come back up. Several restore programs had to be run, and the online “trakker” system was used for charge/discharge only. Many errors occurred during this whole process, and it will be a while before all of them are identified and fixed. The combination program will be run again on July 4 when all the buildings are closed. VI.STAFF A.The staff recognized library page Tanu Verma’s graduation from high school 6/2. B.Becky met with IS Director Aleksandr Chernin 6/5 to discuss budget requests for 2001. C.Becky attended the City Council work session 6/5 to present two items for consideration. D.Kelly celebrated eight years of working for the City. E.Susan Miller completed one year of service as a page. F.Becky attended a Jamboree planning meeting 6/8. G.Andrea Carter celebrated nine years as a page. H.Becky attended a workshop called “Managing in a Time of Chaos” on 6/13. This workshop was sponsored by MELSA and held at the Ridgedale branch of Hennepin County Library. I.Jeanine conducted a review class for the pages on 6/15, 6/19, and 6/21. J.The staff received training in the use of fire extinguishers on 6/26 and 6/29. Thanks to the Columbia Heights Fire Department for providing this training. K.Shari started page training on 6/26 for new library page Danialle Jensen. L.Jeanine participated in a cable shoot on 6/29. VII.MISC A.Saturday hours changed to 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on 6/10. B.The first draft of the 2001 proposed budget was turned in to Finance 6/12. C.A MELSA survey was conducted 6/23. D.Charlie Thompson and Gary Gorman from the Columbia Heights Fire Department examined the exterior stairwells with Becky 6/8 in response to a request from the City Manager for Public Works to review options for a canopy.
