Field trips: Heights preschool on May 3, 22 visits Collection A. I placed a large order for J Fiction and Easy materials B. ! began working on a books on tape order and book/tape combination order. Projects A. Volunteers: I met with the volunteers (there are 8 at this time) on May 24. We established a schedule for this summer and all were trained in the registration process for the reading club. Libra: The Libra Reading Club is ready for this season. Attached are copies of the flyer, reading record, packets, and bookmarks. ! anticipate a larger than normal turnout for this club this season due in part to the School District 21st Century grant funding of a Harry Potter Party scheduled for August. CHASE is funding the reading club portion of this program and has paid for prize incentives, printing and administrative fees. Last years Libra Reading Club drew 163 participants. ! hope to have 200 - 250 this year. Library Kids Lead the Way: This is the theme for the MELSA reading club. This is our traditional summer club which normally draws 700 participants. ! anticipate slightly less participation in this club as the older kids transfer to Libra. Printing is complete, prizes purchased, and we are ready to begin registration June 1. My Teacher Storytime: We will be offering a second storytime option again this summer called My Teacher Storytime. This storytime is also being funded by the 21st Century grant. Six district teachers have signed up to do a storytime for the community. The program begins July 5 and continues through August 9. ! think we will get a larger draw for this program this year since we moved it from 2:00 P.M. to 10:00 A.M. on Wednesdays. Funtime/Storytime: This program starts June 15 and continues through July 27. It is off to a slow start this year. Apparently ECFE is offering a "summer school" for the first six weeks of summer which conflicts with our storytime on Thursdays at 10:00. We will be putting out PSA's to the local papers and sending flyers to ECFE, ICS, and Heights Preschool. IV Staff A. Super Tuesday Specials: All performers are booked. We did have one cancellation, Bill Wiard, but ! was able to fill the date with Professor Bunderschnitzel. Fortunately, the cancellation came just in time and we were able to make changes in the publicity materials. A copy of this year' s publicity flyer is attached to this report. Storytime Kits: ! have been asked by the Anoka County Library system to chair a committee of Children's Librarians developing a new library service project. The committee of seven Children's Librarians will be developing approximately 100 storytime kits. The kits, based on a theme, will contain 4-5 books, realia, finger plays, and activities appropriate for use in a preschool education setting (daycares). The kits will circulate from two locations within the County (Northtown and the new Anoka location). ! am currently in the process of producing 150-200 titles based on these themes to be used as part of 27 kits. The project deadline is June 30. Kelly Olson completed these tasks this month: preparation for three-color brochure promoting summer programs, fliers and posters for Memories contest and Red Wagon Brigade, fliers for My Teacher Storytime, represented the Library at the annual Crestview/Highland Senior Prom, and prepared support materials for Puppeteer Workshop. Pages: we have been short-staffed in the Children's Department again this month. We have two positions unfilled at this time and nearly every week, a page or two will call in sick. This necessitates a rotation, leaving only one person downstairs. The pages have managed to shelve and straighten each evening. For the most part, shelf reading is getting done, but accomplishing support tasks ie. preparation of crafts, folding and cutting of brochures, checking selection tools, has been a challenge. CHASE funds will allow for a Children' s Department seasonal aide this summer. Alicia Andrews will be joining the staff and working closely with me to plan and prepare for upcoming CHASE programs. CHASE Programs A. Puppeteer Workshop: Twelve middle school students participated in the CHASE funded puppeteer workshop on Saturday, May 20. Representatives from the Twin Cities Puppet Guild provided expert presentations in the areas of puppet manipulation, voice and character development, props and special effects, as well as script writing. Comments from all parties were favorable.
