Collection:
A. Weeding of J500's has been completed thanks to help from John Brosnahan, evening
supervisor. Now we begin the process of rebuilding the section. Locating science
materials for the Juvenile area present two problems: a.) Copyright dates of 1999 and
2000 are limited, and we will have to devote considerable time to searching for
current materials. Apparently the County is having similar difficulties as new
materials have not yet begun to appear in the database. John has been passing
recommendations for titles and series on to me and we will be adding some publishers
materials that, to this point, have not been a part of the catalog, b.) These materials
are expensive. Average cost for new science books is $25.00, even with our discount
this is going to be a costly venture.
B. Collection development in easy non fiction progressed with the purchase of $1,000.00
of materials for this area. Much of this expenditure went to the science areas in an
effort to supplement those being discarded from the Juvenile section.
C. Fire safety
1. Expended the last remaining funds of the Fire Safety donation with the
purchase of a series of books on safety vehicles.
D. Book order
III.
Placed a large book order through Baker & Taylor, the majority of the
purchase were fiction (J & YA) and easy materials.
Projects
A. Work on the Puppeteers Workshop continues.
At this time we are waiting for a
response to our proposal from the Twin Cities Puppet Guild.
Due to popular demand we have added another Plantin' Pals storytime/Master
Gardener Program. We will run this program at 9:00, 10:30, and 7:00 p.m. on
Tuesday(s) April 18 and 25.
District 13 Community Education Involvement Coordinator, Judy Yantos, has given
us the verbal go ahead for two summer projects. My Teacher Storytime will be held
again this summer on Wednesdays beginning in July. Community Education has also
joined with CHASE and the library in support of the LIBRA Reading Club. As a part
of this collaborative effort Community Education will sponsor an end of the summer
Reading Club party (Harry Potter) for those students who read 5 books this summer.
Both programs will receive funds from the 21st Century Grant.
The Children's Department is working diligently on these upcoming programs and
