II. Collection
A. Weeding: With the help of Children's Department Clerk, Kelly Olson, we were finally
able to complete the weeding of the J 700's.
B. The County has been heavily weeding the J 500's (Science)sections and had requested
that we do the same. With the help of John Brosnahan, Supervisor, we have begun weeding this
section also. Thus far we have discarded approximately 120 titles. John has progressed through
the J569 section and his knowledge of the publishing industry and books is proving to be very
helpful. ! am in the process of searching for funds to upgrade and replace these materials. With
any luck we will be able to locate an organization or agency willing to donate $5,000.
C. ! weeded the J paperback collection and discarded about 90 titles. These racks are
getting very full but will empty quickly during the spring break and summer months.
III. Grants:
A. The Library has received funding through the CHASE program for additional
programs for the next 2 years (2000 and 2001). The dollar amount being funded is estimated to
be approximately $14,000 (7,000 per year). These funds will be used to institute programming
for middles school students including author visits, a coffeehouse, puppet workshop and a variety
of reading programs.
IV. Projects: The children's department has a number of"new" projects in the works for the
Spring season.
A. Evening Storytime: Thanks to the additional funding we received this year, the
Library will be offering an evening Storytime beginning March 7. These storytimes will be held
each Tuesday evening from March 7 to April 11 .M
B. Plantin'Pals Master Gardeners and Kids will team up to read and learn about plants
and growing. This program will contain a storytelling component followed by a planting
activity. U of M master gardeners will facilitate.
C. Puppeteer Workshop tentatively scheduled for May 20 will be the first CHASE
funded program. ! am talking with members of the Twin Cities Puppet Guild (Puppeteers of
America) and considering an all day workshop. The workshop would be open to kids 14 years of
age and up.
D. Winter Storytime begins Februaryl. We currently have 54 children registered for the
Winter session of storytime.
E. Volunteers It is that time again. We will be advertising for volunteers for the summer
months beginning in February. This will give the schools plenty of time to help us recruit
volunteer members. Kelly Olson has designed a poster for distribution to each of the schools. !
will be giving these posters to the area Media Specialists next month.
F. Super Tuesday Performers. ! have booked the performers for this summer's Super

Along with the Director, Rebecca Loader and Library Board President, Barb Miller,! attend
a work session with the City Council on Jan 17th. The purpose of the session was to discuss the past
referendum and consider possible action for the future. ! found the meeting to be enlightening and
informative. ! am looking forward to the opportunities and challenges that the year 2000 has to offer.
VII. Staff:
Pages are continuing to work on mending the J Fiction. It appears that we will be
nearly fully staffed by the first of February. I commend tose staff members who have pitched in
during this time of low staffing and worked doubly hard to keep us all afloat.
Kelly Olson, Clerk, has been kept busy with the preparations for the upcoming
programs, phone training, year statistic tabulations, and additional circulation desk duties.
