Operational Report for December, 1999
Projects:
1. Central Middle School Open House. Marsha and I attended the CMS Open House on two
separate evenings. We were set up near the gym entrance but out of the direct line of traffic. We
set up a system where one person would work the crowd in the main hallway and pass out entry
forms for the Harry Potter book. The other person would remain at the table and receive the
entry forms and pass out brochures regarding other programs and services available at the library.
We thought that the library presence was well received and we hope to see an increase in library
usage in the coming months.
2. Bulk Loan delivery_. I delivered the bulk loans to the High Rises this month.
3. Heights Theater Project. I am still working on the Heights Theater Project. I was able to get
some photocopying done but have focused most of my attention on the microfilm reels. I have
been asked to put together a time line of events that have occurred at the Heights Theater over
the past 70 years. I am using the microfilm to scan for events and then when I have time I will go
back and photocopy the issues that I have noted. I am doing this to decrease the amount of time I
spend handling the newspapers (because of their fragile state) and also to hopefully speed up the
time spent photocopying. I am enjoying this project because I am learning a considerable amount
of information about the history of Columbia Heights.
In the process of pulling together the information for the Theater, I have come across
information regarding the history of Huset Park and also information about the history of the Fire
Department. I contacted Dana Alexon, Assistant Fire Chief, and asked if the Fire Department
would be interested in a copy of related articles. He thought that would be wonderful and he
figures they can use some of the information when they celebrate their 75th anniversary in the
coming years.
4. Fiction mending project. I have continued to pull fiction books for mending. We are now up
to BEN.
5. Fiction Shifting. I have starting shifting the fiction that was mended this summer. I have
shifted from PAR-ZZZ. In the process of shifting, I discovered approximately 25 foam bottomed
book ends. I promptly removed those and replaced them with non-foam book ends.
6. Paperbacks. Due to a shelving crunch in the paperbacks, I weeded and shifted the Romance
and Mystery paperbacks. I have not shifted the Science Fiction or Western because they seem to
be alright for the moment. The Fiction paperbacks were moved earlier this fall and have not
outgrown their shelves yet!
Misc.
A.
Magazine labels were typed twice a week on average. Several of the new titles have
started arriving. We have also been receiving duplicates of several titles but none of them
have been worth keeping.
System maintenance was completed. I have started checking EXIT sign lights as part of
system maintenance to make sure that there are not any bulbs burned out.
Paperback order was placed and received. Four of our westerns were missing but they
shipped them out the next week.
Bills were completed as needed, including the special year end run. I have started the first
2000 bill list!
Voice mail has been changed several times this month due to the holidays.
Year end counts have been started for gate count, reference tally count, and ILL count.
