FRIENDS OF THE LIBRARY: The Friends of the Library met on Monday, December 5, at 1:00 p.m. with 9
members present. Connie Carlson conducted the meeting because Rita Norberg could not attend. Kay Reiners
volunteered her sorority to sew the banners Marsha wants for the children's department. The Friends voted to fund
this project. As part of a project to update the Friend's membership packet, I had members review their constitution
and by-laws. There will be one change that will be voted on at the February meeting. Membership renewal forms
will be sent to all members in January along with a letter thanking the Friends for the holiday cookies they donated
and the proposed by-law revision. 100 books were collected by the Friends for Project Bookshelf. Rita picked up
the books the week of December 12 and took them to Fridley for the holiday distribution sponsored by SACA. The
Friends discussed additional projects for 1995, but didn't decide on anything specific at this meeting.
SENIOR CITIZEN PROGRAMMING: On Wednesday, December 14, Jeanne Fischer read "The best Christmas
Pageant Ever" at the Senior Citizen Time. This was the library's annual holiday party for the seniors and included
holiday cookies donated and served by the Friends of the Library. A cookie raffle was held at the end of the
program and 18 people won a Small plate of cookies. Thirty-five people attended this program.
HOMEBOUND SERVICE: I selected books and arranged delivery to four homebound patrons this month.
BOOK DISPLAYS: During the month of December, I had two book displays: Holiday Books and Read Across
America. On Tuesday, December 27, I plan to put up a new display: "Make It By Hand". This display contains
books featuring items you can make by hand, such as: bread, marbled paper, quilts, crocheted items, baskets,
soap, pasta, pies, etc.
DELIVERY OF BOOKS TO PARKVIEW VILLA: On Friday, December 6, Heather Cook and I delivered 30 books
to the high-rise and returned with 28. The circulation on those returned was 35. I instructed Heather on how to
do the delivery so she can take over for me in January while I'm on sick leave after my knee surgery.
GRAPHICS: Produced signs for the doors with the holiday hours, and some which will be needed in January to
advertise the page positions and the closing of the library for Martin Luther King Day. A winter schedule of Senior
Citizen programs and dates was also produced.
VERTICAL FILE: The following subject headings were added to the vertical file this month: Banks and banking,
Scientology, Fast foods, restaurants, chain, etc.-guidebooks, and Castle Heights. Also filed all new travel
brochures and state highway maps received.
BULLETIN BOARD: The holiday bulletin board "Merry Catamas" was put up on December 6. The bulletin board
· for January with the theme "Don1 get stuck in the snow, read your way to spring" will be displayed the week of
December 26. · ·
NEWSLETTER: Ran off 300 copies of the January newsletter on Wednesday, December 21. The January
newsletter marks the 14th year that I've produced "The Library Sampler'.
ADDITIONAL PROJECTS:
Wrote an article for the city employee newsletter that included news about the library staff and several want
ads. Sent news releases to the Focus and Northeaster to publicize the January Senior Citizen Time.
