Rebecca Loader, Library Director Marsha Tubbs, Children's Librarian December 1, 1994 November Operational Report November had a number of highlights, including the 75th Anniversary of National Children's Book Week, We took the slogan "Read Across Amedca" and transformed the bulletin boards into very large pictures made from the states of the U.S. (A sort of puzzle approach.) Patrons were given the option of answering quiz questions for prizes. Most felt the display was wonderful and unique but opted to not participate in the quiz. Some thought the quiz too difficult, others felt challenged. Overall, it was interesting to hear adults and children discussing "Which state was the clown's hat?". STORYTIME: Fall session ended this month and I believe they were a big success. Costumes and special activities announced in advance helped to keep everyone interested and coming back. Illness affected attendance during the last 2 sessions. Plans are underway for Holiday storytime beginning December 6. VALLEY VIEW ELEMENTARY: The Learning Center Librarian at Valley View asked me to read to a class in the library. ! met the 3rd grade class on Tuesday, November 15 and read A.iob for Wittilda by Caralyn Buechner. I received many compliments, the children thought I "should do voices for the movies", high praise indeed for an amateur. COLUMBIA HEIGHTS HIGH SCHOOL: I was also asked to participate as a storyteller for 2 speech classes at the Senior High School. I told Sam's sandwich and read There's a niqhtmare in my closet. Both were well-received, though it was unnerving to be analyzed before, dudng, and after telling a story. I believe the classes benefitted and that I made a respectable appearance on behalf of the library. This is not an experience I would like to repeat, but ! felt that the request may come again and the library could benefit from the Columbia Heights High School and Columbia Heights Public Library contact. Plans are underway for the Winter Reading Club "Pagemaster". I think we have a winner here! I have been contacting local businesses requesting donations for incentives. Thus far I have strong possibilities from: Pizza Hut (free pizza) Rainbow (video rentals) K-Mart (gift certificates) I plan to contact Title Wave, Target and some movie theaters as well. Kelly has done a great job of putting together booklists to accompany the reading club. Fantasy a Booklist is being printed now at Columbia Heights High School through a cooperative program with our page Heather Cook. Heather is in an advanced printing course and will be using some of our designs for course credit. I am anxious to see the final result. NEXT MONTH: Holiday Storytime and Crafts Marsha & Mickey at Disneyland (I can't wait)
