HomeMy WebLinkAboutJune 6, 1994TO: FROM: DATE: SUBJECT: MAY OPERATIONAL REPORT M. Rebecca Loader, Library Director Marsha Tubbs, Children's Librarian June 6, 1994 May Operational Report Business has slacked off somewhat during May as schools prepare to close for this year and families begin preparations for the upcoming summer. The children's department spent the month of May planning and preparing as well. PROMOTIONS; 'the month of May was Asian Heritage Month and the display case in the children's department includes items from Asian backgrounds. The large bulletin boards have been changed in preparation for upcoming summer reading clubs. The new bulletin boards feature characters from illustrator Denys Cazet (featured illustrator for 1994 M ELSA Summer Reading Clubs) and will include stars labeled with each summer reading club's name. I prepared and presented three storytimes for Parks and Recreation on May 9 and featured a new book prop for the Very hun~3ry caterpillar. On May 20, Kelly and I were invited by the 1st graders at Immaculate Conception School to 'their theatrical presentation of Mother Goose nursery rhymes. In response to the invitation, we prepared a puppet show for the ICS classes on their last visit. Kelly and I did our presentation for the Three little pi.qs blues and by the end of the show everyone was singing along. Great fun was had by all! ' COLLECTION: The EJ FIC collection has been completed and is housed in shelving behind the childrens librarian's desk. Becky and I made a trip to Bookman on May 12 to purchase paperbacks. I managed to fill in and complete the following series: Goosebumps ( 3 copies each) Choose your own adventure #118- (1 copy each) Fear Street (2 copies each) Dunc series [Gary Paulsen] (2 copies each Pee Wee Scouts (2 copies each) Startleet Academy (2 copies each) Saddle Club (2 copies each) Boxcar Children (1 copy each) All of these series are in the database at this time. We began processing the new titles and are adding some processing procedures to hopefully extend the life of the paperbacks. The average cost of additional processing is 10¢ per copy. I hope to double the life of the paperback ie. 50- 60 circs as opposed to 25-35. I will be watching this collection and provide you with updates. COLLECTION DEVELOPMENT: This brings us to the real meat of the collection-non-fiction. Over the upcoming summer months I plan on weeding and developing areas of non-fiction. It is my understanding that the 900's sections was weeded last year. Therefore, I plan on covering that section first to pick up the few items that may have been missed and to develop a listing of additional titles to purchase. I anticipate completion of 900's by mid to end July, then I will progress into 600's followed by 500's. I hope to complete the first two sections by September 15. Coming in June: *Class visits to schools are scheduled for June I & 2. *Summer reading club registration begins June 13. *Starring on Tuesday at the Library - 11 weeks of performers appearing at 2:00 p.m. every Tuesday. This program begins June 21. *Storytime and Funtime begins June 23 for 6 weeks. (We are still preparing crafts for this session but I expect to be finished this week.) *Storytime for 60-70 learning disabled children has been scheduled for Jun 24 at 9:30 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. (2 separate groups). The instructor, Julie Stitt, has requested a sea or ocean theme - luckily I have one partially prepared at this time. ***Add to these: the collection development in 900's, planning for fall storytimes, previewing the filmstrip collection and ordering materials in non-tiction, filmstrips and audio cassettes. June stacks up to be another very busy month.
