On J~nuary30, I had the opportunity to attend the Municipals Winter Workshop.
The morning session was entitled, Self Esteem, Assertiveness and Problem Solving.
This was conducted by Mary Stultz, who has had 14 years experience in training
and organizational development. She demanded a lot of group participation as
she went through different aspects of her presentation. The difference between
aggressive and assertive behavior was pointed out and when it is neccessary to
be assertive. Mary Stultz presented a step-by-step guide to learning assertive
behavior. This is a behavior that must be learned by some people. She also
gave us a checklist of some strategies for self-esteem, which is just another
way of saying self-knowledge. I enjoyed her personality and feel that I
learned some good points worth remembering.
The afternoons speaker, Orville Weiszhaar, spoke on stress and achieving a balance
in your life. His topic was very general, concerning your over all well-being.
He has a PhD in psychology from the U. of M. Many of his comments were very
timely, but his presentation was sometimes difficult to follow. It was your job
to pick out the points that were pertinent to you andhe was very aware that each
of us ~ould get something differnet from him and some would learn nothing at all.
His comments were very down to earth. He was not full of a lot of false promises on
how this class would change your life. You can't effect a dramatic change all
at once, you must take small steps toward the goal in order to achieve it. He
had no magic formula, he believes that each person must find what will motivate
or work for them,~and it will be different for everyone. Although I found his
style of speaking difficult at first, I felt Dr. Weizhaar gave me a lot to think
about and use constructively in my daily life. I appreciate the opportunity to
participate in this workshop.
