TO: FROM: Robert S. Bocwinski, City' Manager M. Rebecca Loader, Library Director~ SUBJECT: Operational Report #25 (June 16-June 29, 1990) DATE: June 29, 1990 Significant Accomplishments A. Be The first two Tuesday Specials were held on June 19 (The Cadoba Clowns--128 attendance) and June 26 (The Son-Sheim Singers: 110 attendance). The first two pre-school Funtimes were held on June 21 (71 attendance) and June 28 (47 attendance). Reading Club has 580 participants at this time. Registration is about the same as last year at this date. Mary Cooper and Jo have observed that quite a few new faces are appearing at the programs and about 35% are "regulars" from year-round use. Jo distributed brochures to every school-age child in the district so that information would reach people new to the area as well as established patrons. Departmental Goals A. On 6/22 Cable TV North Central switched out the library's character generator with a different one after transmission problems arose. On 6/28 the station has developed new broadcast problems. The appropriate people have been notified. The shield on the flagpole lights is in place. Its effectiveness is being evaluated. Becky attended the American Library Association annual conference in Chicago June 23-27. Please see attached report. Issues and Problems A. On 6/20 Northern Air discovered that even after the air-handling unit's cooling coil had been wired into the building's power source, it would not work. Kumar had to re-install the coil correctly. The air conditioning in the basement is finally operational. COLUNIBIA HEIGHTS PUBLIC LIBRARY 820 - 40th AVENUE N. E. Rebecca Loader, Library Director~u~ SUBJECT: American Library Association Annual Conference "Information access--Back to the basics", Chicago, ILL. June 22-26, 1990. DATE: June 29, 1990 The following is a brief overview of the sessions I attended at the conference: 6/23/1990 1. Opening general session Guest speaker Tom Wolfe greeted conferees (18,648 librarians, 7,250 exhibitors) with a general analysis of how libraries have influenced culture in the 20th century and the effect of the approaching year 2000 on life. "The Online/Offline Public Catalog: Making the right choice" Presenters representing the 3 choices available for an automated catalog (online, CD-Rom, and online with CD-Rom back-up) gave the pros and cons of their particular catalog set-ups. Very appropriate to Columbia Heights as this decision is imminent. Friends of Library USA-Author award luncheon Charlotte Vale Allen and Michael Childress were guest speakers. They both spoke on how they became writers and gave readings from current works. 4. "Preschool Services in the year 2000" A panel presented data on current happenings which will impact preschool services in the year 2000. Topics included: demographics, early childhood education, publishing trends, and children's services from the management point of view. 6/24/1990 1. "Overt-covert censorship in our Public Libraries" Presenters addressed librarians and trustees about practices and policies which might constitute censorship. Discussion was also heated on newly-revised interpretations of the Library Bill of Rights. -2- 6/24/1990 cont. 2. "Chicago, Chicago! That swap 'n shop town!" A marathon give-away of the best library promotional materials printed in 1989-90 was sponsored so librarians could take actual samples home. Mini-training sessions (e.g. fundraising, evalution of public relations pro~rams) were also held. 3. "Righting a wrong-Birth of a Children's Author"-- Sponsored by AmericanLibraries Trustee Association Avl was guest speaker for the Trustees luncheon, and he discussed his decision to be an author and his life-long commitment to libraries and learning. 6/25/1990 1. "Four-Star breakfast" Public Library Association sponsored breakfast with author Scott Turow and the winners of four awards for major contibuttons to libraries. me Data Research Associates Special Interest Group: CIRCLE DRA.is the library's automation vendor, and they sponsored a special session on the CIRCLE section (circulation services) part of the computer system. Participants were also.given the opportunity to prioritize concerns and suggestions for changes in the system. "Job Classification Studies: Responsibilities, Titles, Salaries and Status." Four presenters discussed how to conduct effective classification studies. One was.from Hay Associates. The second presenter had a~study from 1978, which I thought was terribly outdated. I would.like to take this opportunity to express my appreciation for being able to attend this conference as a representative of the City. The value of exposure to current developments and trends in the library field is very high.
