The Friends of the Library did not meet this month because the staff attended a funeral for Ethel Scudder. The Friends next meeting will be Monday, November 3rd at 1:00 p.m. Items on the agenda for November will include: Project Bookshelf, MLA Conference, volunteering to take attendance and to work on targeting for the new security system, and wish list. Several members of the Friends have already volunteered to help with the targeting. B. I selected books for bulk loans to Parkview Villa, Royce Place, and Heights Manor. I also selected books for two homebound patrons. II. Collection A. I selected and processed an order for books on tape. B. Numerous subjects were added to the vertical file: A'I-FENTION DEFICIT DISORDER; CYCLING; DIANA, PRINCESS OF WALES, 1961-1997; FITNESS; FLIGHT TRAINING; GLOBAL POSITIONING SYSTEM (GPS); HAM RADIO; HEART DISEASE; HURRICANES; LIGHTNING; MANIC DEPRESSIVE ILLNESS; MEN-HEALTH; METEOROLOGY; MUSHROOMS; OSTEOPATHIC MEDICINE; PETS; SKIN CANCER; SNOWMOBILE TRAILERS;- STUDENT AID; TERESA, MOTHER; VACCINATION; WIND CHILL INDEX; and WINTER STORMS. C. The order of pamphlets from Life Skills Education was received. III. Projects A. The display of books on Poland continued throughout the month in observance of October as Polish American Heritage Month. B. I attended the MLA Conference on Thursday, October 2nd, and made a presentation at the MLA Public Relations competition on the brochure of our 1996 annual report. C. Updated our User's Guide and ordered 500 copies printed at IPC Printing. D. Selected and ordered bookmarks and promotional materials for the adult reading club which will begin in January. E. My annual performance review was held on Tuesday, October 14. IV. Miscellaneous B. C. D. E. F. G. H. Added fiction and non-fiction books to the CCH-NEW displays. Filed and withdrew shelf list cards. Ordered and received supplies. Updated inventory control sheets. Prepared copy for the November newsletter. Posted current best seller list. Attended reception for Public Works Director candidates. Kindergarten- 4 classes, 64 children-4 adults 1st grade- 4 classes, 73 children-4 adults 2nd grade - 6 classes, 118 children-6 adults 3rd grade- 0 classes 4th grade- 1 class - 17 children-1 adult 5'h grade- 1 class - 26 children - 1 adult Fourth Baptist 5th grade - 2 classes - 40 children- 6 adults B. Headstart - 2 classes- 35 children- 10 adults C. Schiffelly Puppets appeared October 17 (MEA break). The audience consisted of 35 children and 14 adults. D. Storytime: We held 24 storytimes during the month of October. Registration was slow to start, but picked up by mid-October. We have a group of Middle Eastern children attending our Thursday 10:45 session from the Lamal school in Fridley. II. Collection A. I met with the Director on October 15 and again on October 29 to place book orders for year-end. The collection is looking good. I have not had time to do discards/weeding of non-fiction. I hope to get it done before year's end. Ill. Projects A. Booklists: 1. Easy reader booklist is typed and proofed-awaiting changes, layout and printing. 2. Maud Hart Lovelace booklist has been written, awaiting typing, layout, printing. 3. ABC booklist has been updated, ready to print. B. October Keeping in Touch newsletter was sent to area schools/libraries October 18. Copies attached. C. City newsletter: Heights Happenings was submitted to Janice in Recreation October 14. We are awaiting a copy to proof. D. Promotional flyers, news release for Schiffelly Puppets were prepared and distributed. Flyers went to area school for distribution to K-2 classes. IV. Meetings A. Attended a CHILDLIB meeting at Northtown October 8. Submitted a written report to the Director following the meeting. Major items of discussion included: cooperative publicity possibilities between libraries and Anoka County Parks Department. Use of a video to publicize Summer Reading Club in the schools, and standing orders for series paperbacks. B. Met with the Director on October 21 regarding future planning and MLA workshop information. Discussions included possible grant options, creation of a file(s) containing community information, statistics, etc., and upcoming supervisor meeting. C. Met with the Director on October 28 regarding grant options, the library's 5-year plan, and the 75th celebration/plans. D. Attended meeting with Becky, Kelly, and Jeanine regarding computer classes. VII. Staff A. B. Administered page training test to Laurie Willard on October 21. Supervised staff and assigned tasks for the following projects: 1. Magazine storage relabeling. 2. Magazine storage clean up. November projects will include: 1. Shifting J Fiction. 2. Shifting Easy collection. 3. Keeping in Touch 4. Promotional materials for Sean Brown. 5.
