I need to order additional treasure chest prizes as we are running Iow. II. Collection A. Weeding: with the help of our senior pages, I completed the weeding and discarding of the J Non-fiction collection. We utilized the computer program run by ACL which gave us titles and call numbers of those items circulating less than ten times. The program was a tremendous asset, speeding the process by quite a margin. I still need to do a visual check of the section, and discard those items in disrepair, damaged, etc. B. Easy Inventory: We have begun the final stages of the easy inventory A-M. I am amazed at the small percentage of lost items. I have marked 14 items missing from the easy section. We have inventoried A,C,D,E, and N-Z. Hopefully, we will have this project completed by the end of the August. C. Collection Development: I have been working on upgrading the J000-J400's. This is a difficult section to upgrade as it covers some "hot" topics. The J100's and J300's cover the self-help and psychology areas with subjects like death, suicide, emotional and physical problems, stress, anxiety, supernatural, etc. Since the library does not have a young adult non-fiction section and very little has been written for elementary age children on these topics, the director and I have decided to purchase materials for teens and attach them to the adult records. These materials will be marked "Housed in the Young Adult Section" and labeled with a YA label. I am making a conscientious effort to select titles that are informative, and unbiased. This project is taking some time. III. Projects A. Volunteers are relabeling easies with spine labels and subject labels. B. Volunteers are labeling Caldecott and Newbery Award and Honor books. C. Pages are mending easies, magazines, and some non-fiction. D. Pages have been updating J booklists for reprinting. E. Magazine discarding is complete and Kelly Olson is working on the new storage labels and updating the ACL listing. F. I submitted copy for the City-wide newletter to City Hall on July 17. Kelly Olson typed, formatted, and helped with the layout. G. Prepared three book props/flannel boards for use during this summer Funtime/Storytime: Gumdrop tree, Cow in the middle of the road, Tiger in the teapot. IV. Staff A. I joined the director for Samantha Pace's performance evaluation. Samantha has been a delight to work with and does an outstanding job with the children. I supervised staff and coordinated work assignments between pages, volunteers, and Clerk-Typist II. The pages have been very diligent this season. Projects are getting done on time and they are handling the extra business quite well. I have noted an occasional mental lapse, especially during our busiest times. Keeping them on track and focused does take a lot of time and energy. Circulation has been up. We missed circulating 1000 items on 2 or 3 separate days by less than 50 books. We have been busy! Mo Volunteers A. We have 14 volunteers this season. They have all been very conscientious about keeping their scheduled work times or reporting in if they are unavailable. For the most part we have had excellent coverage. The first puppet troupe (volunteers) performed two plays before the July 29 Super Tuesday Special Jack's Bean Problem, and No moon, no milk. Troupe number two is scheduled to perform August 8. Volunteers have aided in all or part of the following projects: labeling of J Fiction (genre labels), labeling of easy books (spine and genre labels), set up/take down of activity room every other day, registration of Summer Reading Club members, preparation of crafts for Funtime, folding of newsletters/brochures for distribution, recycling. VI. Miscellaneous A. Upcoming calendar: Complete magazine storage project, complete easy inventory, plan the ICS fall schedule, plan Fall Storytime, design, print, distribute Fall Storytime brochures, begin Keeping in Touch/September issue, budget expenditure complete by September 30, contracts to MEA and Children's Book Week program participants-Schiffelly Puppets and Storyteller (to be determined), book order-Mary Kay Ulness, book order-Bookmen, book order-Baker & Taylor.
