Collection
A. Juvenile paperbacks have been weeded, labeled, and linked to the database. I prepared a J and YA paperback
order which was sent June 26. This order should bring both collections up to date and in line with the catalog. We
have some sedes titles that the County does not carry but are in good demand. I determined to keep these and
will add them as uncataloged materials until or unless the County is willing to give us a reduced rate for short entry
of paperbacks. These titles include: Animorphs (series), Thoroughbred (series), Clue (series), Full House (series),
Dinotopia (series), and Star Trek Deep Space Nine by John Peel (series).
B. Weeded some of the Easies A-M prior to the booksale. We are preparing to inventory Easies A-M.
Ill.
Volunteers:
A. This season's volunteers are off to a great start. Their numbers total 14. Eight are involved in puppeteering on
Wednesdays. All are registering Summer Reading Club members and encouraging the children to read! Those
volunteers assigned to Tuesday afternoon and Thursday morning are helping to set up or take down before and
after programs. Considering the staff shortages this month, we would have been extremely taxed regarding public
service if it weren't for the help of these volunteers. Staffing for Super Tuesday three years ago consisted of
myself, Kelly Olson and three pages. In 1996 and 1997 this program was staffed by myself, Kelly, and 2+
volunteers. Hopefully, we will be able to make adjustments in July and with luck 1998 will bring a FULL staff during
the summer.

Values
A.
First Open House:
The Children's Department activities included gifts for first time library card applications. We registered 32 new
patrons. Each new registrant received their choice of a balloon, foam hat, or bookmark. From 4:00 - 6:00 P.M.
the department hosted myself as "Mother Goose" doing bookworm face painting (approximately 58-65) and
filmstrip showings. I estimate we saw 92 people from 3:00 - 6:00 P.M. In addition, I supervised staff and
volunteer activities and assigned tasks. Everyone completed their necessary tasks. The Open House was a
success in large part due to the coordinated efforts of all,
Book Sale
A. Supervised staff and volunteers dudng the book sale and the clean-up following the sale. Book sale preparations
began Tuesday, June 3, and clean-up was completed Monday, June 9.
VI.
Projects
A.
Booklists completed in June include Newbery Honors listing, Caldecott Honor listing, young adult fiction (staff
recommended), and an update of the Newbery/Caldecott awards titles (see copies attached).
VII.
Staffing
A.
Supervision of volunteers has taken a large amount of time this month. The recent death and funeral of ICS
classmate Theresa Daley affected many of the volunteers. I spent a considerable amount of time rescheduling
and reassigning tasks. I joined the Director for Courtney Huber's first year performance evaluation. Courtney is
doing well in her position. I supervised pages and assigned the following tasks during the month of June: shelf-
reading of storage magazines (completed), shelf-reading of Focus and Northeaster storage issues (in process),
relabeling of J Paperbacks, (completed), checking of selection tools (in process), labeling of J/YA magazines
storage (in process), mending, and shelf reading.

Programs
A. The Friends of the Library sorted books for their book sale and conducted a business meeting on
Wednesday, June 4. They discussed the need for more workers at the sale and also how few
customers they usually have on the second day. I suggested they consider having a one day sale
next year, and they seemed to think that would be a good idea.
B. The Friends total from the book sale was $863.65; the library's $582.70. The Friends amount was
about $125.00 more than last year.
C. The Friends wanted all the leftover books to be given to a local institution instead of being recycled,
but settled for a few boxes of paperback books and the left over large print. These items will be
given to an assisted living facility in Columbia Heights.
D. I arranged a book delivery to one homebound patron this month, and selected and processed bulk
loans for Parkview Villa and Royce Place. Parkview Villa received 15 books; Royce Place 20.
E. I was contacted again by a resident of Heights Manor about starting a bulk loan to their facility. I
told the resident I had sent an organization card application to the manager of Heights Manor a
while back and had not received a reply. I finally did receive the signed.card application the week
of June 16. After receiving the application, I tried to contact the manager but only succeeded in
leaving a message. As of this date, she has not returned my call.
II.
Collection
A. As I received tourism publications from the states, I labeled them and added them to our vertical
file. Last year's brochures were discarded as the new ones were added.
B. I did not have a chance to place my audio cassette order for books on tape.
III.
Projects
A. I prepared posters, flyers, name tags and an entry form for the library's open house and prize
drawing in connection with Heights Pride. I also arranged for the Friends to donate cookies and
bars and to set up and serve refreshments during the open house. I ordered t-shirts and
purchased gift certificates from Barnes and Noble which were the prizes for the drawing.
B. I took an inventory of the library's supplies and began the supply order for the year.
