Programs
A. The Friends of the Library met for their annual dinner meeting on Monday, April 7, at 6:00 p.m. at
the Dragon House Restaurant with 16 members present. I had prepared sign-up sheets for their
June booksale and for two of the library's upcoming attendance surveys. There was a good
response to the book sale sign-up sheet but very Iow interest in the attendance survey. The
Friends also discussed their participation in the Columbia Heights Lions Jamboree activities and
agreed to make cookies and bars for the event and serve them. After the meeting, Rita said she
would talk to the members to encourage them to volunteer for library projects such as the
attendance survey.
B. I pulled books for two homebound patrons this month and arranged delivery.
C. On April 3, I took 15 books to Parkview Villa for their bulk loan and returned with the same number.
The circulation on those returned was 8. I also readied a bulk loan of 20 books for Royce Place
which was picked up by Karen Fantle.
Collection
A. During the month I added the following subject headings to the vertical file: Anoka County-One
year action plan; Cabinet officers-United States; Camps-Directories; Education-United States--
Statistics; Fertilizer-Organic; Lawyers-Minnesota-Directories; Learning Disabilities; Reunion, All
class (1928-1961 )--Columbia Heights; School District 13--Restructuring plan; Seniors--Minnesota--
Metropolitan area--Statistics; Tornadoes--MN; Trucking regulations--MN.
Projects
A. On March 31, I arranged a display in the City Hall's lower level display case to promote our library
and National Library Week. The display featured graphics from ALA with the slogan, "Kids Connect
@ the Library", juvenile books on computers, and buttons from our collection. '
B. The display of tax forms was dismantled on April 16. I thought the revolving .display rack and
labeled bins helped patrons find what they needed. It did not eliminate the high demand for forms
on April 15th and last minute tax preparation.
C. I promoted National Library Week, April 13-19, by organizing guess contests in both the adult and
children's room and for the staff, plus a drawing in the adult department. This included designing
entry forms, signs, and posters and shopping for and arranging materials for the guess contests.
The drawing for prizes and opening of guess contest forms was done on Tuesday, April 22.
D. The library's 7th annual adult reading club, "Chalk One Up for Reading" ended on Saturday, April
19. 103 adults registered for the reading club and 704 books were read (I kept track of the number
of prize entry forms we received). I believe this year's reading club was a success and worth the
extra work and commotion it causes.
Goals
A.
I prepared a proclamation for National Library Weei% which was read at the City Council meeting
on Monday, April 14.
