Kloss Operational Report, November 1996 November 26, 1996 FRIENDS OF THE LIBRARY: The Friends of the library met on Monday, November 4 at 1:00 p.m. with 6 members present. The wish list was presented by Becky and Marsha and voted on by the Friends. They decided to purchase one printer for the adult section, a revolving display for tax-'forms, and a keyboard carrel. They also decorated a box for Project Bookshelf and trimmed Campbell's.labels. The Friends briefly discussed having another fund raiser to raise money for the additional printer that was on the wish list. The discussion on this will continue at the December meeting. BULLETIN BOARD AND BOOK DISPLAY: This month's book display: Politics USA was put up on November 1 and featured both fiction and non-fiction books on politics, presidents, and elections and was accompanied by a bookmarldbooklist. I also pulled items for a display of "Holiday Books" which will be set up after Thanksgiving and feature Christmas cookbooks, crafts, and traditions. I began working on my holiday bulletin board the week of November 18 with the theme "Season's Readings". I hope to display it the first week in December. HOMEBOUND SERVICE: I selected books and arranged delivery for two homebound patrons this month. BULK LOAN TO PARKVIEW VILLA: During the month, a fire was reported in the room where our library books are shelved. Fortunately early in the month, I had posted several signs requesting all books currently checked out from the shelf to be returned for inventory, and I picked up 30 of them. Although none of our books were damaged in the fire, there are still 20 books unaccounted for. The staff at the High Rise said they would place another article in their newsletter, requesting residents to return the books. Becky and I have discussed the High Rise's delinquent account but have not decided on how to remedy the situation there. We would like someone on the High Rise staff to be responsible for the books, but we don't believe anyone there is willing to do that. GOALS: CIRCULATION CAMPAIGN: Free "Elect to read" book bags were given to the first 25 people who checked out five or more books during the month. "Elect to read" bookmarks were available to everyone. SIGNS: I listed all the magazine boxes that need labels and gave the list to Kelly so she could produce them on Wordperfect. I also had Jeanine produce new labels for the CD bins and have replaced half of them. VERTICAL FILE: I started weeding the vertical file and ordering replacement pamphlets. New pamphlets have been received on: alcoholism, AIDS, allergies, and asthma. New subject headings added this month are: Smithsonian exhibit; Fitzgerald, F. Scott; Authors-Columbia Heights; Elections-United States--1996; and Elections-MN. ADDITIONAL PROJECTS AND AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITYWORKED ON DURING THE MONTH: MMK/jms withdrew and filed shelf list cards produced library newsletter updated User's guide and made arrangements with IPC to have it printed ordered supplies received supplies ordered winter issue of the Minnesota Explorer for distribution processed returned overdue and request notices supervised staff and coordinated work assignments while Becky was on vacation 11/8 and when she attended the DRA conference on 11/14. TO: FROM: DATE: SUBJECT: M. Rebecca Loader, Library Director Marsha Tubbs, Children's Librarian November 26, 1996 November Operational Report BUSINESS: This month the Children's Department had 23 ICS class visits and 15 storytimes. ICS CLASS VISITS: This month ICS class visits included a book talk for 3rd grade on mysteries. I covered series titles in both EJ and J Fiction and presented 20-30 separate titles. 9TORYTIME9: Included a security blanket day and a "surprise special" Thanksgiving storytime with the exception of the two days with bad weather, storytimes have been full to capacity. The last Fall Storytime was held November 21. COLLECTION DEVELOPMENT: Kelly and I along with some help from Sha~'i Briley, have finished the EJ Fiction inventory. We will begin the easy inventory in December. I hope to complete this section by May. MANAGERIAL/SUPERVISION: Pages have been assigned transactions for non-fiction and paperbacks this month. Non- fiction transactions are complete through 529. This will continue into next month. Paperback transactions are on-going and difficult to evaluate progress due to circulation turnover. After the paperback transactions are complete, t hope to be better able to determine which series are keepers and which to discard or discontinue. The pages have also processed two paperback book orders (the last one is nearly complete). I am having some shelving difficulties with the pages. At this time I can't determine whether it is deliberate mis-shelving, overuse of sections due to increased circulation, or inconsistent shelf reading habits. I will continue to monitor the problem. CHILDREN'S DEPARTMENT-CLERK/TYPIST Ih Reformatted the layout for our Newbery/Caldecott Honor booklists, began retyping J Fiction catalog cards, and typed and printed materials for the National Children's Book Week promotion. Magazine receiving continues nearly daily. MEETINGS: I attended the Children's Librarians meeting at NTN on October 31. Several librarians arrived in "costume". Agenda items covered Summer Reading Club, year-end update and possible changes in storytime formats. I will be serving as an ex-official member of a County task force brought together to determine the changes to be made (if any). On November 18, I also attended a workshop presented by Jim Trelease, author of The read aloud handbook. The workshop was very motivating and informative. My report is attached. I also had a meeting with ICS principal Mr. Stanley Brown. This meeting was at my request to discuss ICS service for the 1997-998 school year. The results of the meeting will be forthcoming in December. BULLETIN BOARDS: The Children's Department now has the Fire Safety award winners on display and Dr. Seuss - Oh, the Places You'll Go (National Children's Book Week). It is not as elaborate as the rainforest jungle, but time was limited. FRIENDS: The Director and I submitted our wishlist to the Friends of the Library on November 4.
