HomeMy WebLinkAboutOctober 31, 1996TO: FROM: DATE: SUBJECT: M. Rebecca Loader, Library Director Marsha Tubbs, Children's Librarian October 31, 1996 October Operational Report October has been a very busy month in the Children's Department. We have had 29 visits from ICS classes, one tour from Fourth Baptist School, and 25 storytimes averaging one storytime, and two classes per day. ICS CLASS VISITS: Of the 29 visits from ICS this month, eight involved the reading or presentation of a story - Fanny's dream or The pumpkin blanket. Six class visits included booktalks. I presented 20+ titles for the second grade featuring the EJ Fiction section, and 20+ titles for the fourth grade featuring hardcover series titles from the J Fiction collection, and 8-10 titles from the 1997-1998 Maud Hart Lovelace listing for the third grade. STO. RYTIMES: We have a total of 108 children registered for storytime (seven late registrations). This is many more than most, if not all, ACL locations. Columbia Heights can be very proud of the community commitment and response to this program. Storytimes this month included these "hits". Three little pi,qs blues, puppet play; Fro.q.qy .qoes to school; Grandma Bryant's pocket, Little Red Ridinq Hood:' a new-fanqled prairie tale, and of course, a Halloween parade. SELECTION: I made a book selection trip to Bookmen and purchased $264 in paperbacks for the juvenile collection. In September, we added a large number of Berenstain Bear, Arthur, and Clifford titles to the collection, they all circulated immediately and remain in circ to this day. Therefore, during October, I added $200 in paperback copies to these collections. I believe we should now have a minimum of 2-3 copies of these titles. Hopefully, this will be enough to fill requests. I also placed the final hardcover orders for this year in late September and mid-October, nearly $3,500 in hardcovers. We have been receiving positive comments from the public regarding the availability of materials and the "new" things that they haven't seen before and enjoy. This is a positive sign that collection development is moving in the right direction. COLLECTION DEVELOPMENT: I have had very little time this month to devote to this task. As soon as possible, I intend to weed the paperback collection and complete the EJ Fiction inventory. ORGANIZATIONAL DUTIES: This month included the development of a 1997 Departmental Goat Statement (month by month) submitted to the Director October 25 and completion of the 1996 budget expenditures. MANAGERIAL DUTIES/SUPERVISION: The Children's Department Clerk-Typist II (Kelly Olson) has also been busy this month. Kelly has placed and received orders, received and attached all incoming magazines titles, prepared two newsletters for distribution, and completed the layout for the "new" COH filmstrip catalog. As a support staff member, Kelly also aided in the service provided to the 29 classes and 25 storytimes plus visitors we saw this month. The pages have been busy as well this month. Book returns have been overly large due to the number of patrons. The Director and I met with all the pages this month regarding various library procedures. I have noted a number of mis- shelvings - adult material in the Children's Department, ACL materials shelved in-house, etc. and we have had some difficulty with collection of fines etc. Overall though I am pleased with the performance of this group of pages. The evening tasks are getting done on schedule. Shelving is complete by 5:00 or 5:30 at the latest and they ask for additional tasks when others are completed. The pages stamped all. the new incoming materials and began processing many. They are in the process of doing transactions for paperbacks and completed their October shelving on time.
