Kloss Operational Report, October 1996 October 30, 1996 FRIENDS OF THE LIBRARY: The Friends of the Library met on Monday, October 7 at 1:00 p.m. in the library boardroom. They discussed Project Bookshelf, and Marsha Tubbs, Children's Librarian, talked to them about their participation in upcoming children's programs. At the November meeting, the library's "wish list" will be presented. BULLETIN BOARD AND BOOK DISPLAY: The "Fall into books" bulletin board continued into October. This month's book display was: Serial Thrillers, books in the tradition of Silence of the Lambs with accompanying bookmark/booklist. This display proved popular and most all of the books were checked out. During the month, I pulled books for November's display: Politics U.S.A. This display and accompanying bookmarldbooklist will be put up on November 1. It features both fiction and non-fiction books on politics, politicians, presidents and their wives, presidential candidates, and elections. HOMEBOUND SERVICE: I selected books and arranged delivery for three homebound patrons this month. BULK LOANS: On Thursday, October 3, I delivered 30 books to Parkview Villa and returned with 28. The high rise has a tendency to have a delinquent account because books are taken from the library shelf and not returned or returned very overdue. To rectify the situation, I plan to retrieve as many books as possible and then see what is still out. I posted a memo that all books taken from the shelf need to be returned by 10/31/96. The director of the high rise said she would also place a notice in their November newsletter. I will make a second trip to pick up books in November. After their account is cleared, I will resume my normal delivery schedule. Anne Heiderscheit of Royce Place returned the books on loan and picked up a new selection. She is very conscientious and is taking responsibility for the books and their return. VERTICAL FILE: I began weeding ihe vertical file and sent for current information on alcoholism, abortion, AIDS, allergies and asthma. I also contacted LSS and requested copies of the Vertical File Index for use in this project. SIGNAGE: I began repairing the signs in the east room and on the magazine boxes. I listed the signs I needed and Jeanine produced them on the computer. The signs by the copy machine, microfilm reader, and on the consumer education carrel have been replaced. The labels on the magazine boxes through Corporate Report have been straightened and taped if needed. All the dewey numbers in the east room have also been taped. CIRCULATION CAMPAIGN: The first activity for the circulation campaign begins November 1. Patrons who check out 5 or more items from the adult section of the library will receive a free "Elect to read" bookbag I ordered 25 book bags to be given away each month from November through January. Bookmarks with the same themes will be given away to all patrons. Staff members are encouraged to tell patrons about this promotion. OTHER AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY WORKED ON DURING THE MONTH: withdrew and filed shelf list cards produced newsletter recorded supplies used from inventory sheets ordered supplies received supplies xeroxed copies of the best seller list for distribution ordered program supplies inventoried paper supply selected and placed an order for books on tape MMK/jms
