Operational Report August 1996
SUMMER READING CLUB: The Summer Reading Club came to an end on August 23. We had 714 children registered,
86 less than last year's total of 800. Registration figures from ACL show most registration totals down. I suspect this is
due to a decrease in the number of young children in the community/county. The Children's Librarian meeting this fall will
most probably include discussion regarding the decrease in registrations.
VOLUNTEERS: Our volunteers will be honored at the September 3, 1996 Library Board meeting, am very pleased with
each and every one of them. They all took their volunteer positions seriously, reported on time, notified the department
if they were unable to come, found subs for their shifts and pitched in to perform some of the real dirty tasks. They are
a wonderful group of young people. All together they donated 284.75 hours of time this summer. I will be asking them
if they wish to volunteer during the school year. Particularly to help with programs after school and evenings.
STORYTIME: Preparation for Fall Storytime is underway. The session begins on October 8 and registration begins
September 3.
SUPERVISION: In addition to the supervision of part-time staff, I had the privilege of supervising the full-time staff on
August 8 and August 9 in the absence of the Library Director. Marilyn Gray, evening supervisor, complemented the staff
nicely for those two days as substitute Children's Librarian. Everything went smoothly thanks to the efforts of a dedicated
and supportive staff. Thanks to everyone for making my job easier.
INVENTORY: YA inventory has been completed. Kelly and I spent approximately two weeks this month on YA inventory.
We have the EJ Fiction and Easy inventory remaining. I anticipate that the EJ section will be complete by the end of
September.
WEEDING: I have been weeding out old and damaged items as we have progressed through the inventory. I do not
anticipate weeding Easies until after January 1, 1997. The Easy collection usually brings a good sale price at the annual
book sale. I'm sure we don't want to store them any longer than necessary.
COLLECTION DEVELOPMENT: I am preparing my recommendations for 1997 for collection development areas. We have
some sections of non-fiction which still require additional materials (300-self-help, 921-current biographies, 500-dinosaurs
and endangered species, etc.). Most of the non-fiction has been updated and is in good shape. The highest circulating
items are cassettes, cd's, and boardbooks - we could expand in these areas. I still have to deal with the dilemma of
paperback vs. hardcover in the J Fic and YA Fic sections. At this time we are buying paperback copies whenever available
with the exception of award-winning titles or series titles that will generate a lot of circulation.
MENDING: The pages have completed the Easy mending project.
DONATIONS: HB Fuller has donated $400 to the library for Children's Programming. Many thanks to this civic-oriented
company.
ICS: The Director and I met with the new ICS principal, Mr. Stanley Brown, on August 21. We discussed past and future
service to ICS. Mr. Brown expressed great appreciation to the library for this "wonderful" opportunity given ICS students.
We agreed that the teachers would be contacting the library to schedule visits, and that the class visiting would begin the
week of September 16.
