HomeMy WebLinkAboutJune 26, 1996TO: FROM: DATE: SUBJECT: M. Rebecca Loader, Library Director Marsha Tubbs, Children's Librarian June 26, 1996 June 1996 Operational Report DONATIONS: Thank you to ICS for the most generous donation of $2,500 to the Children's Department. $400 has already been spent to replace lost or damaged records that accompany our filmstrips. These filmstrips are used most often when ICS classes visit the library, thus making this expense appropriate for these funds. I am preparing a listing of materials which I will submit to the Director for the expenditure of the remaining funds. The Children's Department also received the donation of a Nancy Carlson drawing from Mrs. Harapat and Mrs. Twedell, two teachers from North Park Elementary. The drawing was created by Nancy during a recent visit to the school. I would like to get this framed and hang it in the department. VOLUNTEERS: Our teen volunteers began working on June 11. What a treat! They are enthusiastic, pleasant, energetic, and just plain fun. The volunteers are working in pairs on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. There is a morning shift · from 9:30 - 12:30 and an afternoon shift from 12:30 - 2:30. Thus far, they have completed the craft pieces for Funtime, registered Summer Reading Club members, colored parts for stick puppets, removed labels from easy readers in preparation for new labeling, and washed some easy books. It's a challenge to keep ahead of them. They move very quickly. With our current staff shortage, Kelly and I would be drowning if it weren't for these teens. We are most grateful. SUMMER PERFORMERS: We had 126 children and 32 adults for Norm Barnhart's performance. The group was a little hyped and Mr. Barnhart commented that it was difficult to maintain the crowd's attention. He suggested requiring the adults to sit with the children. An excellent idea if we had additional carpet space. 32 adult would leave very little carpet for children. The Wonder Weavers appeared on June 25 to a crowd of 106 children and 26 adults. FUNTIME: We have had 49 registrations for our Summer Funtime and a waiting list of 10 - 12. Attendance has averaged 28 children and 8 adults. A large group, but I find it interesting that so many register, but don't attend. The crafts have been a big success, especially the bookworms! Thanks to staff member Jeanine Schmidt for her crochet talents in the making of 50 worm bodies. The children also made door hangers that read "Don't bug me, I'm reading"; sunflower pictures in frames for Father's Day; and painted rock turtles for pets. READING CLUB: Thus far we have registered 504 members in the Summer Reading Club. I reported 607 registrations to you in 1994 and 434 in 1995. NEXT MONTH: *Complete easy reader project *Process board books *Order ICS donation materials *Filmstrip reorganization *Process/catalog replacement tapes *Begin planning for Fall and Winter 1996-1997 MAT/kjo ~ M. Rebecca Loader FROM: Mary M. KIoss SUBJECT: Operational Report, June 1996 DATE: June 26, 1996 FRIENDS OF THE LIBRARY: The Friends of the Library had another successful book sale on Thursday, June 6 and Friday, June 7, which netted them $726.65. This amount was about $40.00 less than the average and about $50.00 less than last year. The Friends tried a "two for the price of one" sale on Friday and also a bag sale the last hour. There next meeting date is Monday, July 1 and on August 5, they will have their second evening meeting for the year. BULLETIN BOARD AND BOOK DISPLAY: This month's bulletin board has the theme: "This summer CATch up on your reading" and coordinates with the book display in the adult reading room with the same theme which features "newer" fiction. HOMEBOUND SERVICE: I selected books for two homebound patrons and arranged delivery to their homes. DELIVERY OF BOOKS TO PARKVIEW VILLA: On Thursday, June 5, I delivered 30 books to Parkview Villa and returned with 29. The circulation on those returned was 36. OTHER AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY: INVENTORY CONTROL AND SUPPLY ORDERING: During the month I gave Kelly the current inventory control sheets for updating. This included the addition of new supplies and deletion of those we no longer use. I also had her increase the number of columns across each page to twelve, so I could record the amount used for the year, on just one set of sheets. I also ordered additional supplies this month and completed the paper order for the year. ORDERING OF AUDIO CASSETTES: The increased cimulation on our current books-on-tape this summer prompted me to place an additional order for books-on-tape this month. My last order was in May. So many books-on-tape have been checked out this summer, that at times there are few left on the shelves to check out. FILING OF SHELF LIST CARDS AND REMOVAL OF CARDS FOR ITEMS MARKED WITHDRAWN: With a few extra assigned hours in the board room, I completed filing all the shelf list cards I had and also completed removing shelf list cards for items listed as withdrawn on the computer sheets from Anoka County Library. BOOKLISTS: I began working on a booklist of new biographies and autobiographies. The last time this was done was several years ago. I want to have this booklist ready to accompany a book display in September. I also am thinking about doing a bookmark which lists the books in the "Prey" series by John Sandford and include on it authors who write novels with a similar plot such as James Patterson, Thomas Harris, William Katz, Edna Buchanan, and Phillip Morgolin, etc. NEWSLETTER: Copy for the July newsletter went to Kelly on Friday, June 21. I will duplicate the newsletter the week of June 24. SAFETY COMMITTEE: I attended the first meeting of the revised Safety Committee on Tuesday, June 4. The consensus of the group was the Safety Manual needs to be revised and departments do not share the same issues and concerns. We are to bring to the next meeting a list of problem areas in our department and possible suggestions and solutions. The next meeting date has not been set. VERTICAL FILE: Most of the states I requested travel information from have responded, and the materials received have been labeled and placed in the vertical file. On Friday, June 6, I supervised the staff and coordinated work assignments while Becky was on vacation. MMK/jms
