Report on ACL Children's Librarian Meeting of April 10
Meeting*began at 3:45 at Northtown Library Children's Storytime room. Kathy Baxter informed the
group that we will be receiving 2,500 wave pool coupons in 1996 for distribution during Summer
Reading Club. It was decided by the group, that the coupons would be distributed to each branch
based on the percentage of children registered last year in Summer Reading Club. The libraries will
hold weekly drawings for wave pool tickets.
Kathy has a contact in New York (a Maud Hart Lovelace fan) who has agreed to help ACL get gift
certificates to Barnes & Noble for Summer Reading Club and/or volunteers. She will follow up on this,
the result hinges on the timing for Northtown's Barnes & Noble opening. I requested that COH be
included in this program. My request was enthusiastically received, so I anticipate we will have some
(number unknown) gift certificates to give away this summer.
ACL is having great difficulty raising funds for summer programming. As of this meeting they
anticipated that the County's funding would fall short by approximately $5,000. Kathy was asking for
additional names for donations and prayers.
ACL Director Jerry Young is asking branch libraries to resolve problems regarding the shelving of
juvenile paperbacks. He wants more face outs. The librarians agreed but stated that lack of face out
paperback units to house the collection has forced them to utilize hardcover shelving. The shelving
is nearly full, but the collection is constantly turning over. No resolution to the problem was presented.
ACL will begin utilizing a special label for EJ paperbacks. Kathy will let the staff know what has been
selected.
