FRIENDS OF THE LIBRARY: The Friends of the Library met at 7:00 p.m., Monday, August 7th with 12 members
present. Since I was on vacation at the time of this meeting, I prepared a library update. This included information
on my recent books-on-tape order in which I used. monies received from the American Legion and VFW. Friend
of the Library~ Marie Marquart is a member of both these organizations and was instrumental in obtaining the
money. The update aJso included statistics on the number of children in the summer reading clubs and attendance
figures for the summer children's programs. The Friends are anxious to spend the money made at the June book
sale, but will have to wait until after the 1996 budget is approved in October. (copy of library update attached).
SENIOR CITIZEN PROGRAMMING: On Wednesday, September 13, David Allan presented slides of his trip to
England. Twelve senior citizens attended this program and refreshments were served by the Friends of the
Library. I attribute the Iow attendance at this program to many seniors being on vacation, the hot weather, and
two other activities scheduled this day in the morning: the Hiking Club and 500 Club.
To publicize the upcoming fall slide programs, I designed and produced a brochure-Fall 1995 Senior Citizen Slide
Program Schedule (copy attached).
HOMEBOUND SERVICE: During the month, 3 homebound patrons requested books.
BULLETIN BOARD: I am currently working on September's bulletin board with the theme: "This fall-make reading
your goal". I will use illustrations from Harry Allard's children's book, Miss Nelson has a field day featuring Viola
Swamp and her football team.
BOOK DISPLAY: The book display for September is ready and has the theme: "Solve mysteries ...Read". It
features current mysteries, a bookmark, and a puzzle, "The gumshoes and their day jobs". It will be setup on
Friday, September 1 (bookmark and copy of puzzle attached).
DELIVERY OF BOOKS TO PARKVlEW VILLA: Before my vacation, I pulled a selection of books for delivery to
Parkview Villa. Heather Cook delivered them for me on Friday, August 4.
NEWSLETTER: I gave copy for the September newsletter to Kelly on Friday, August 25. It will be runoff the week
of August 28. ,.
POSITION TARGETS: During the month, I have been developing a library directory of dewey decimal numbers
for the most requested subject areas. I thought that a bookmark would be a suitable format for this, but soon after
starting this project realized it wasn't large enough. The directory will now be in a brochure format. I gave all the
copy to Kelly for this brochure, and she hopes to have it done by the early part of September. This brochure will
contain the call numbers for about 150 different subjects.
VERTICAL FILE: Letters requesting current travel information for the fifty states were sent out the week of August
21.
The following subject areas were added to the vertical file this month: Animal rights, Anoka Public Library
centennial, Automobiles-cost of operation, Covered bridges, Drug testing, Election results--Columbia Heights,
Food-preservation, Gambling problems, "1 love you" in different languages, Letter writing--library funding, Monetary
