August Operational Report
PROGRAMS: Summer Reading Club registration for 1995 totaled 644. Regrettably, registration figures
were down from 798 for 1994.
STARRING TUESDAYS: Consisted of eight separate programs for 1995. 836 children and 220 adults
attended this summer's programs. Attendance totaled 1,056 with average per performances at 132 - down
from 166 per program in 1994.
FUNTIMES: The library held six Funtimes this summer, average attendance was 40 children. I think the
adjustments in registration to include age 7 helped the popularity of this program. I believe we should
consider expanding this program to two sessions next summer and perhaps utilize volunteers to help with
the crafts. (Both preparation .of parts and the day of the program).
PROMOTIONS: Kelly and I spent a good portion of this last month on promotional brochures and
newsletters. The library page of the city-wide newsletter was completed and delivered to Parks and
Recreation on August 4. I wrote the copy for the Children's Department, Mary wrote copy for the adults,
and Kelly and I designed the one page layout. The layout process is extremely time consuming. A
computer graphics program would be very beneficial as the use of WordPerfect is slow and cumbersome.
A new Children's Services brochure was also written and designed - hopefully rough copies will
accompany this report.
CIRCULATION STATISTICS: I also spent considerable time this month investigating the circulation
statistics. I have entered 5 years of Columbia Heights circulation statistics (both totals and collection
sections) into my home personal computer. From here I developed graphs in the hope that they would
make it easier to identify a "hole". Some interesting things emerged along with a few valid questions. The
Director has reviewed the information collected and a report is forthcoming.
WORK IN PROGRESS:
Preliminary 'plans for Fall and Winter storytime are underway. Registration begins September 5
for fall storytime. I have also begun preparations for the Holiday Storytime and craft sessions.
Puppet plays: I have written a rough draft of a new puppet play featuring knock knock jokes. It
has some potential. Also, the puppets for our first shadow puppet play are nearly complete, Bear
shadow by Frank Asch.
3. Book props. I am in the process of designing two new book props for use during fall storytime.
4. Labeling of easy materials (Holiday, ABC, 1-2-3, Valentines, etc.) Nearly complete.
5. Rewriter procedures manual.
Schedule of class visits for fall. Planning and scheduling filmstrips showings, booktalks, and
stories.
