May Operational Report
,-~pril began with the preparation for National Library Week. The Children's Department held two contests. 1) Guess how
many jelly beans? There were 246 jelly beans in the jar and Luke Parger guessed 243. Luke is approximately 2-years
old (the jar was as big as his head). He was thrilled! 2) How many books did the Children's Department check out in
19947 Jess Rebeau won the game "Where in the USA is Carmen Sandiego?" with a guess of 17,800, the closest anyone
came to the real answer of 70,072.
READIN t 3LUI : Our Winter Reading Club closed April 14. We registered a total of 338 children in the Pagemaster
Reading Club. The theme was a major success. The prizes were even more successful. POGs received the most favored
votes followed closely by the games (donated by Pizza Hut) and the books. Of course the big prize was a movie ticket.
BUDGET: I completed a Program Budget Plan for Pre-school Storytime 1996 and submitted it to the director this month.
Budget proposals for the Children's Department for 1996 were also prepared and submitted. I remain forever optimistic.
PROGRAMS/PUBLICITY: Summer Programs are in place for the 1995 season. Planning for the individual Funtime
sessions still remains. The design/layout for publicity items are nearing completion.

ee th~s summer. We w~ll~wng out t,ckets for thIs Tuesday Special. Pubhsher Representative Andy Schmitz was here
on April 17, and Jack Kubitz come on April 25. I met with both representatives to view the spdng collections and received
catalogs for future orders.
STORYTIME AND CRAFTS: We had a two week session of Storytime and Crafts (4 classes total) April 11 - 20. 63
children were registered, average attendance was 12. This program requires a large amount of planning and preparation -
I am considering extending Pre-School Storytime and discontinuing the Spring Craft session next year. The attendance
does not warrant the preparation time.
COLLECTION DEVELOPMENT: In the area of JS00's has been completed. This section has been weeded, updated
materials have been ordered for 500-589. I did not do the 590 - 599 (animals) section largely due to the expense involved.
I plan on upgrading this section over time and adding new titles annually. J700's and JFic are next on the schedule. I hope
to finish these by September. God willing and the creek don't rise!
DISCARDS: Along with the collection development weeding, I have been receiving lists for possible discards from Anoka
County Library. These lists consist of 30 - 40 titles each week. I have been checking each title to determine whether or
not I want to discard. Many are being taken to the book sale others I have opted to keep, at least for the time being. Both
collection development and discards are time consuming, but necessary. The non-fiction collection is looking much better.
BOOK ORDERS: Were placed for some 1995 titles ($600) and 1993 and 1994 titles for collection development $1,200.
HEIGHTS PRIDE WEEK: The city is putting its best foot forward for Heights Pdde week. The library will be as well. I
')mpleted a pattern for a 5 1/2' reproduction of the Heights Pride logo to be painted on the front window of the building.
., all goes well, it should be quite nice.
THE CREEK RISING: It did rise the last week in April. The Activity Room was under water for a couple of days. Thanks
to city maintenance pumping out the drain field, all is again dry, and follow up in the best of hands.
