February Operational Report
The Children's Department has been very busy this month!
STORYTIME: The winter storytime sessions began on February 7. We had 104 pre-schoolers register
and have averaged 18 - 22 in attendance for each session. The mild weather has helped as more
venture out. There seems to be a renewed interest in the themes and the special events. We are
seeing new faces and calls come frequently wanting to know if "we're the library that has teddy bear
picnics at storytime". If I could only play more...
Winter Reading Clubs began February 7 as well. Pagemaster has been a huge success! We have
199 children registered, double last year's registration. The school children have been very
enthusiastic. It was good timing as the Book It Club ended the week before Pagemaster began. The
first prizes will be given away Friday, March 3. Pizza Hut has donated 200 Pagemaster games and
80 doorhangers/bookmarks; the Mann Theaters donated free movie passes; we'll have books, pogs,
paperdolls, pencils, pads. Lots of giveaways. It should be a lot of fun. I'm very excited about the
reception this reading club has gotten and would like to make it an annual program. However, I had
not counted on the added stress to an already busy staff. A reading club requires much more time with
each individual patro~ (registration forms, chances, drawings, phoning winners, etc.) I'm sure we will
survive, but the regular workload is on hold, temporarily and backing up.
BOOK ORDERS: I placed a large order this month. 1994 and 1995 titles for all sections of the
collection. It appears that our discount of 43.9% from Baker & Taylor is applicable to only([~ editions
not the reinforced binding editions. The Director and I agreed that all subsequent orders I place will
be for trade editions. (It's more economical to have them rebound if necessary.)
COLLECTION DEVELOPMENT: I need to begin work on the 500's but have put this project on hold.
The Children's Department received an additional $500 for books-on-tape and music for children. I
would like to get these out next-in time for the summer travel season.
MEETINGS AND TOURS: Joe Schmitz, Publisher's Representative, met with me on February 17. I
selected a number of books for the children's department and will check the collection before ordering.
On Tuesday evening, February 28, I conducted a tour of the library for 11 Brownies and 2 adults. They
viewed the filmstrip Princess Furball and listened to the story Froeev c~ets dressed. They were thrilled
with the tour.
NEW: Our beautiful new furniture has arrived and has been well received by both children and adults.
There seems to be more activity downstairs, ie. more people staying and reading or studying. Perhaps
this didn't happen in the past because there was no lounge seating? Both Kelly and I have commented
(as has the evening staff) that there are more people in general. Kelly and I have become "Furniture
Police" you can frequently hear things like "No boots in the chair", "Don't stand on the furniture", "Sit,
don't lay".
The children's room is looking just wonderful! Many thanks to all!

FRIENDS OF THE LIBRARY: The Friends of the Library met for their monthly meeting on Monday, February 6
at 2:00 p.m. The annual book sale will be June 8 and 9. The Friends trimmed Campbell's labels and notepads
to be used for reading club prizes. The Friends voted to purchase two $15.00 gift certificates from B. Dalton
Booksellers to be used for adult reading club prizes.
SENIOR CITIZEN PROGRAMMING: On Wednesday, February 8, Bernice Wenzel presented a slide program of
her trip to Switzerland and the French Riviera. Thirty tour senior citizens attended this program and refreshments
were served by the Friends of the Library.
During the month I arranged for three additional slide programs for the year. The programs and presenters are:
May, Don Ellingson (Indonesia); June, John Farber (China); July, David Allen (Ireland). Contracts were sent out
to the presenters on February 15.
HOMEBOUND SERVICE: I selected books and arranged delivery for 3 homebound patrons this month.
BOOK DISPLAYS: The display "DO IT BY HAND" (craft and hobby books) ran until Friday, February 10. It was
followed by a display of "ROMANTIC FICTION".
DELIVERY OF BOOKS TO PARKVIEW VILLA: On Friday, February 3, Heather Cook and I delivered 30 books
to Parkview Villa and..returned with 38. The circulation on those returned was 45.
ADULT READING CLUB: At the beginning of the month, I finished duplicating the reading club log, registration
blanks, and entry forms and ordering the prizes. The 5th Annual Adult Reading Club, "SO MANY BOOKS...SO
LITTLE TIME" began, Tuesday, February 21. It will continue until Saturday, April 15. As of February 24, 1995,
46 adult patrons have registered for the reading club. Expected registralion is 100-120 adults.
VERTICAL FILE: The following subject headings were added to the vertical file: Health--Statistics, Birds--Food,
Population, Pollution--Economic aspects.
BULLETIN BOARD: On Wednesday, February 17, I displayed this month's bulletin board, "SO MANY
BOOKS...SO LITTLE TIME", promoting the library's 5th annual Adult Reading Club.
DONATIONS: Since I was gone last month because of knee surgery, I'm adding this to February's report. Two
doanlions for $100.00 each were received from Tri-City American Legion Post 513 and the American Legion
Auxiliary Post 513. This money was donated to purchase additional audio-books for our collection.
