Rebecca Loader, Library Director Marsha Tubbs, Children's Librarian January 25, 1995 January Operational Report First, let me say thanks to everyone for the changes/additions to the Children's 1995 Budget. the new audio cassette collection and the supplies for bulletin boards. We accomplished most of our goals for the Children's Department in 1994. 2. 3. 4. 5. We are looking forward to Weeding and updating the J600's and J900's. (I have some biographies 921's remaining to place orders.) Weeding and cleaning of easy collection. The Friends of the Library were a great help here! Disassembled the parenting packs. Implemented "booktalks" as part of class visits. Maintained or expanded the programming levels of the Children's Department. We have accomplished these tasks during the month of January: CITY-WIDE NEWSLETTER: The second edition of the city-wide newsletter (new format) is scheduled for delivery in mid- February. I was named the library contact and with the Director helped compile a listing of upcoming events. The library's page in this newsletter covers events through September and was written and submitted by January 30. CLASSES: The booktalks for grades K-4 are going well. Many of the titles I have presented are being passed from student to student. Grades 5 & 6 are tougher to crack so I have re-thought this process over the holidays and made some changes. January 11, I presented 15 titles during one session; giving a short synopsis of each title. I then challenged the students to read a minimum of three chapters in whichever title they chose and return it with a short review. The Children's Department will be printing their reviews (we reserve editorial rights) for distribution. The first session went quite well. Hopefully, they will begin to read something other than paperback series titles. STORYTIMES: I have spent a considerable amount of time planning storytimes for 1995. I am planning storytimes around themes and developing listings of age appropriate book titles and support materials (audio cassettes, filmstrips, videos, flannel boards, fingerplays) wl~en I am finished I hope to have 50-75 themes/programs printed in ring binders for use over the next 1-2 years. We do 24 storytimes each year. I would like not to have to repeat any for 3 years. Thus every session is NEW and different for each child 2-5. At this time I have 22 programs planned. Step Two developing support materials (b~0k props, flannel boards, chalktalks, etc.) I hope to work on this step during tl3e summer months. COLLECTION: We have begun storage of the duplicate and triplicate copies of the J Fiction collection. This will give us more shelf space for new titles in this section. I intend to continue the weeding/updating of the non-fiction in 1995. Beginning with 500's and continuing through 700's or 300's. Adding to the audio cassette collection will be a big seller this year and increasing the J Paperback collection should help the circulation of juvenile fiction. (From 4th grade up, if it's not paperback they don't read it.) READING CLUBS: The February Reading Clubs are in the works. I did contact some local businesses regarding prize donations and received some wonder/ul responses. K-Mart, Pizza Hut, and Rainbow foods all gave favorable response to donations, but asked me to call again late January to firm things up. Pagemaster Reading Club will be open to readers only. Members will receive chances on prizes for every 5 books and an extra chance for every classic title they read. Read to Me Club this year will be a read aloud club-any age may join, but only those titles read aloud. SUMMER: Yes it is coming! The camera ready copy for the Summer Reading Club has arrived. We can begin planning any time. DONATION ACCOUNT: I have written a letter to be mailed to area club/organizations requesting donations for programs. I had to update our contact names and addresses ie. mailing list. I anticipate some response in February.
